Summary Overall we had sixty-three responses to our ‘vegetarian/vegan’ survey. Over all of the responses only 12 people were vegetarian, the rest of the 51 people who answered stated that they were not a vegetarian/vegan, then 29 people went onto say that they would never consider being a vegetarian, whilst the other 13 would consider it. The majority of the people that answered the survey were female and only a small percentage of males, the most popular age group being 10-20 years old.
Question one Do you consider yourself to be either a vegetarian or a vegan? Yes NoThe first question was quite a simple question ‘Do you consider yourself a vegetarian?’ 12people answered yes and 51 people answered no. We got a whole range of answers butwhen it comes into looking at vegetarians only 12 answered and that is not a huge amount ofpeople - the majority of the feedback came from non vegetarians. Our survey was aboutvegetarians so it was ok to get feedback from non vegetarians but we needed morefeedback from vegetarians as that is what the survey was mainly about.
Question 2 If no, would you ever consider becoming a vegetarian or a vegan? Yes No We asked ‘If no would you ever consider becoming a vegetarian?’ The majority being 29 said no and only 13 people said yes that they would consider it. We asked this question to see how many people would consider it and it was surprising that so many people were against it. So again there wasn’t a lot of people considering becoming a vegetarian, a lot of the people who answered the question said that they liked meat too much to become a vegetarian but they could have expanded their answer.
Question 3 Are you male or female? Male Female For this question we asked people; ‘Are you male or female?’ We asked this question so we could filter our results by gender. The majority that answered the survey were 46 female’s compared to 17 males. It is important to ask the gender so we can see which gender has the more vegetarians, and we can see the gender of this people answering the questions.
Question 4 How old are you? 10-20 years 21-30 years 31-40 years 40+ As well as gender it is important to ask how old each person is, so we can see the range of vegetarians in ages, for example if they become vegetarians from a young age or start from a middle age. The groups of ages of which answered this survey are; 10-20 years -24 21-30 years -22 31-40 years -7 40+ - 10 As you can see the majority age group was 10-20 years old, followed by the 21-30 age category. I think that this is the majority age group is 10-20 as we asked people on both our pages and the majority of people we have on there are in the 10-20 category.
Question 5 What is your favourite meal? Meat Pasta Vegetable dishes Other We asked the people answering the survey ‘What is your favourite meal?’ This question was quite hard to filter as a lot of people answer in text boxes and named all kinds of food. So I decided to name some popular food groups such as meat and pasta to narrow questions down so I could make a graph. They answered; Meat - 33 Pasta - 12 Vegetable dishes – 5 Other – 13 I think this was a good question to ask as we can see what food people like, especially if they are vegetarians, we can see if they eat branded food such as Quorn or if they home make their food.
Conclusion We conducted this survey to find out more about vegetarians, and we had quite a few vegetarians answer the survey but there were more non vegetarians answering the survey, which was good, but we were more interested in the vegetarians as that was what the survey was really about. This will influence our work, however as we did have vegetarians answer and we had really good feedback from them saying, are the male or female, how old they are, what is their favourite food, do they prefer homemade food or branded, these are just a few questions which can filter each vegetarian down so we can take what they said and then when we make our recipe cards we can put meals on them that are popular choices. When we were making our survey I think we asked some good questions after researching vegetarians so we could ask more detailed questions. Then we sent out our survey to people we decided to use the internet which I think is a good idea as you can get a whole range of people answering your questions instead of just people face to face with you, and they may not have time to stop to fill it in so you may not of had as much feedback than you would have had on the internet, we also asked people on vegetarian pages on social networking websites. Looking back through our survey there are a few things I think we could have done better and we could have improved. Firstly we could have asked more vegetarians, posting it on more vegetarian pages for example, so we could get more feedback from the people that the survey was really about. We could have also asked the questions a bit better and given tick boxes on more of them as some were quite hard to filter, for example; ‘What is your favourite food?’ When we were making the survey we thought that this was a good question but when it came to analyzing the results and making the graphs it was quite hard to filter the results as so many people were answering the questions with so many different answers, so I had to choose the most popular answers such as; chicken and spaghetti and put then in the meat and pasta groups, a few people said things such as fish but they were very few so I put another category classed as other, then I put all of the results onto the graph.
Evaluation I think that this survey went quite well, we had lots of good responses from people and 12 of those people were vegetarians. It was good to get feedback from vegetarians as that is what the survey is all about, however the majority of the people answering were non vegetarians, and a lot of those people would never consider being a vegetarian, but it was good to get feedback from them. We asked people on social networking sites to answer the survey, as we would be more likely to get more feedback using social networking sites rather than face to face questionnaires as people may not have time there and then to fill them out.Overall I think we could have improved the survey, such as the way we worded and put some questions, for example What is your favorite food? We could have made tick boxes with types of food or listed some as Italian or Mexican so then we could have filtered our results much easier to put them into a graph. We also should have handed out questionnaires as well as doing an online survey and then we may have of gotten more results. It would have been good if we had more vegetarians answer the survey as that is what the survey was mostly about, so we could have put the survey links on more vegetarian pages on social networking sites, but overall I think it was a good result and we got quite a lot of useful information.
