  • 3.  One of the most popular Middle Eastern dishes is jeweled rice, or morasa pulao, which comes out of Iran. Commonly seen at weddings and banquets, jeweled rice gets its distinct flavor and color from saffron and is garnished with stripes of fruits and nuts such as almonds, oranges, and raisins. Grilled halloumi is another popular dish in Lebanon and Beirut; made from goat and sheep milk, halloumi is a type of cheese that is processed without using bacteria or acid. Hummus, widely loved in The Arab world is used on everything from baked potatoes to pita bread. It contains varying amounts of garlic, but many hummus lovers feel the more garlic there is, the better.
  • 4.  Another popular comfort food dish in nearly every region of the Middle East is mjaddarah. While recipes do vary depending on location, the dish generally consists of rice with lentils and is often topped with caramelized onions. Finally, bourekas, puff pastries filled with mushrooms, potatoes, cheese, or spinach, are frequently topped with nigella seeds or black sesame seeds. They offer a wide range of customization options including adding fruits or onions to the dish.
