  • 1. Analysis of ‘only girl in the world’ This PowerPoint represent how music videos portrays the different characteristics of gender and how they use the traits within the music video to establish the artist in this case a female singer it also demonstrates the voyeurism used within the video and the use of mise en scene to go along with the characteristics of gender The video shows how gender is represented in music videos to use the role of femininity to establish the artist and also to create a theme throughout the music video
  • 2. Analysis: -One of the establishing shots show the artist center frame so the audience can grasp the identity of the artist which can help sell her, bringing in more profit. -Her hair is the main focus of the shot as it is bright red, which set the theme of the pink and red undertone colouring of the music video to the audience. This is so that the audience will be able to recognize the video and associate these colourings with the artist, also selling her. -The roses in the background also runs in with this theme, also conveying a flirty, girly vibe. -There is also a soft focus, which, too, conveys a soft, girly, pink theme. This suggests to the audience a romantic yet flirty feel, which is illustrative if the song. Shot Type: Close Up of the artists face – shows the audience who the artist is and there for is recognizable to sell to the audience. This is also proven by the fact she is centered in the shot. Edit: It cuts to a long shot of the artist in a pink field,, which shows the audience the setting of that shot before it commences. Then cuts to a close up of her throwing petals at the camera, thus establishing the feminine theme to the audience.
  • 3. Analysis: -This shot shows the artist singing and dancing which is a convention of the pop genre. -She is still center frame, which again, draws attention to her, making her the first thing the audience sees. -Her outfit is very feminine and girly which follows the theme of this video and so is easier for the audience to grasp the overall theme. However, it is still quite a sexy outfit, which follows the pop genre as it sexualizes women. -Her hair is still the same which draws the attention to her and the flower in her hair also conveys the feminine feel. -Also, the background shows fields of flowers, keeping in with the theme. -The pink colouring, apparent in every other shot, also suggests the flirty nature of the video, which, too, corresponds with the lyrics of the song. Shot Type: Mid shot of the artist – shows the audience the artist herself, her outfit and her dancing which all follow the pop conventions. Edit: The video cuts to a Long shot of the artist in front of a wall of pink flowers, still demonstrating the femininity of the video to the audience. However, her pose suggests the running sexuality of the video and the song to the audience, as well as the outfit she is wearing.
  • 4. Analysis: -The shots shows the artist in the bottom left of the screen so the audience can mainly see the field and the balloons, which draws the audiences attention to the fun and girly aspect. -The pink field still keeps within the theme, which allows the audience to feel the romance, conveyed in the lyrics. Also, as it is current throughout the whole video, it allows the audience to not get distracted by anything else and to adopt the flirty, feminine romance portrayed. -The audience also gets a sense of fun from this shot from the balloons which are in feminine colours. This also illustrated the lyrics and upbeat music which emits happiness, fun and romance to them. -Her outfit, as well as also being feminine, keeps to the convention of sexuality as it shows off her body. However, this is contrasted by the white, which represents purity. Shot Type: Long Shot – able to see the field and the balloons, as they are the main focus. This is also confirmed with the placement of the artist in the bottom left. Edit: The next shot shows a mid shot of the artist in right of the shot though the camera pans right so artist is in the center of the shot, displaying to audience the ongoing movement which conveys upbeat pop song, yet also confirms that she is center of attention. the the the the the
  • 5. Analysis: -This shot is very illustrative of the lyrics as it shows the artist at the side of the shot with the rest of the location looking empty, representing the rest of the world and she is by on her own looking free an in a state of ecstasy which conveys her rapture of being made to feel like the ‘only girl in the world.’ creating a link between lyrics and visuals. -The colours are still within the flirtatious, girly theme, making the audience feel safe within the theme, but also feel flirty and empowered. -Her dress also follows this code, but blends into the background, creating an illusion of not wearing clothes which illustrates the sexuality of the song. However, the bottom of her dress is a bright, hot orange and is ruffled which stands out against the rock and so draws attention to that region and suggesting that she is on fire – a sexual suggestion which follows the pop convention. Shot Type: Long Shot – emphasizes the emptiness of the location which is established with the placement of the artist as it shows the audience the location but conveys her being the ‘only girl’ and that she is on top of the world, relative to the lyrics. Edit: Lyric: ‘Only girl in the world’ The video cuts to a mid shot of the artist, though the camera is placed slightly behind the artist which displays to the audience that she is the dominant figure, illustrative of the lyrics that she is the ‘only girl in the world.’ Also, the camera keeps in with the 180° rule as the shot is still on the right hand side of the artist.
  • 6. Analysis: -The shot shows an extreme close up of the artists face, again, bringing attention back to her to let the audience know that this is the face of the artist, so to remind them who’s product they’re buying into, which is common in this genre and is seen in Justin Bieber - Baby. -The artist also has a seductive smirk on her face, illustrating to the audience the sexual nature of the lyrics of making ‘it last all night.’ -The flirty, girly pink undertones are also present, keeping in with the theme that suggests that the target audience is females from these colours but also due to the flirtatiousness of them, making women feel empowered in their sexuality. Shot Type: Extreme Close Up of the artist – reinforces her image to the audience. Lyric: ‘Make it last all night’ Edit: It cuts to along shot of the artist in front of the wall of flowers, mentioned earlier, in a pose that an older audience will recognize as conveying a sexual connotation which is illustrative of the lyrics. It is also includes stop motion quick cuts which cuts on the beat, keeping in with upbeat tone, conventional of the genre.
  • 7. Analysis: -This shot shows the artist in an almost sexual pose, which is illustrative of the song as it and shows the artist to be in a state of bliss. -Her breasts are also the center of the shot, and so focus, illustrating the sexual nature of the song and also a common convention, seen with other artists such as Nicki Minaj. -The fireworks represent sex to the audience, which come from the expression of ‘fireworks in the bedroom’. This is also suggested by the use of smoke to represent the heat of sex. This displays to the audience intensity and the power of sex conveyed in this song. This entices women to want to do the same and can do through this song, therefore selling more records. -It is shown to be night time and, to some people, this is a sexual time of day, and also conveys the end of the song as night represents an end to the day. Shot Type: Close Up shot – though the main focus is the artists breasts as you can’t see her face, reinforcing the sexuality of the song. The shot is also in slow motion, highlighting to the audience this section which is an important piece of narrative and also the intensity of it. Edit: It cuts to an extreme close up shot of the artist, which, conforms to the genre, focusing the audiences attention back to the artist and her image.
