  • 2. Alkanes are hydrocarbons (made up of only carbonand hydrogen atoms). The carbon atoms are in achains linked by single bonds. Alkanes can beeither gaseous, liquid or solid.Alkane Facts:1. Single bonds2. Name ends in "ane"3. If carbons are in a ring start with “Cyclo” and ends with “ane”4. A chain or ring of carbons5. Always name the longest chain of carbons
  • 3. When you found the longest Carbon1 carbon = meth chain you add –ane to the Carbon2 carbons = eth name. Ex: eth + –ane = ethane.3 carbons = prop4 carbons = but Examples: • Methane5 carbons = pent • Propane6 carbons = hex • Octane7 carbons = hept • Pentadecane8 carbons = oct If you have a ring of carbons you add9 carbons = non Cyclo- in the beginning then the Carbon10 carbons = dec name and at the end you add –ane. Ex:11 carbons = undec Cyclo- + eth + -ane = Cycloethane.12 carbons = dodec Examples:13 carbons = tridec • Cyclomethane14 carbons = tetradec • Cyclopropane15 carbons = pentadec • Cyclooctane • Cyclopentadecane
