Transcripts - Narrative music video analysis (Foo Fighters-Walk)

  • 1. NARRATIVE MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS (FOO FIGHTERS- WALK) Joseph Giggs, Rob Anthony, Curtis Roberts
  • 2. STYLE  The style of the music video is, for the majority, a narrative video which tells the story of the lyrics- showing a man breaking down. However, nearing the end of the song, there is a use of performance showing the band perform in a warehouse like area. This may have been done to maintain the bands image, display them a rock band and to keep the music as the focus of the entire product.
  • 3. NARRATIVE  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PkcfQtibmU  It was directed by Sam Jones and was released on the 2nd of June 2011. The music video starts out with the artist in a car- hearing and seeing the irritating sounds while stuck in a traffic jam. The idea of the traffic jam is used to reflect the artists life: stuck, jammed and not going anyway. The story of this video has been heavily based of the 1993 film ‘Falling Down’ which features a man essentially losing his sanity. This aids the audience to understand the stress that the protagonist is supposed to be feeling and replicates a massively popular film thus making the narrative easier to understand. The story then continues to see the artist becoming more and more uncontrollable and follows the same structure of the film. By following the story so closely, it furthers makes the video more relevant to the lyrics.
  • 4. LYRICS  The lyrics are about the artist trying to recover and ‘Getting good at starting over’. Therefore the music video has been made to reflect upon the lyrics by showing the character breaking down after trying to recover again.
  • 5. MUSIC VIDEO RELATIONSHIP  The music and video have a very close relationship. The slow start to the audio is mirrored by the slow cuts in the music video early on. The music therefore matches the action in the video such as the use of cymbals when the protagonist is beating the shop keeper. This makes the video more engaging and interesting while also putting further emphasis on the music itself rather than the video.
  • 6. OVERALL  This music video is highly effective is imitating the style used in ‘Falling Down’ and creates a music video which is humorous, clearly conveys the message of the lyrics and keeps the action fresh while also mimicking ‘Falling Down’
