NARRATIVE Charlie Hooper
WAS NARRATIVE USEFUL/NOT USEFUL TO MY MEDIA WORK? Narrative was useful when creating our teaser trailer because ithelped to create the basis of what our film would be about if it was made into a full film. Because it was only a teaser trailer rather than a full trailer, we did not want to give away too much aboutthe story line so that we would leave the audience with questions and want to find out more about the film. By not including muchnarrative we were able to achieve this restricted narrative that is usually used in a teaser trailer.
PLOT, STORY AND ENIGMAS Bordwell and Thompson describe plot and story as follows;PLOT: the explicate presentation of the events (which is usually less than the story and may be in a different order, e.g. the Social Network. STORY: All the events- both those that are visually represented and those that are inferred. They can be explicit or inferred. Explicit means articulating all the details in anunderstandable and clear way which leaves no doubt as to the proposed meaning whereas inferred is to determine the story on the basis of reasoning or evidence. ………………………………………………………………… Roland Baths came up with this definition of Enigma codes;ENIGMA CODES: Images/sequences which control how much we know in a story, engaging and holding the audience’s interest. They present puzzles which demand to be solved. These codes can be minor or major, their purpose is to delay the time taken to reach the end solution and audiences pleasurably.
ESSAY PLANOur teaser trailer had a non-linear (not in chronological order) narrative because we usedmontage to show how the victim is typing his blog which appears between other scenes and alsowe used flashbacks to show his deteriorating state of mind, these scenes were repeats of previousscenes and so were not in a chronological order. It was left open because it is a teaser trailer andso we wanted to leave the audience with questions and hold their interest in the film rather thananswer all their questions as they may not feel the need to watch the film if they knew whatwould happen. The theme of bullying is strong through out our teaser trailer as we used shots of the victimbeing surrounded and physically pushed by the other teenagers. Revenge can be inferred by theaudience because of the shots of the victim browsing on the social network site; Facebook, onhis bully’s pages. This guess is backed up by evidence at the end where there is a shot of thevictim writing ‘I’ll get my revenge’ on his blog. The trailer does not show whether he does get his revenge or how he would go about getting thiswhich leaves the audience with questions and anticipation that would hopefully make them wantto watch our film, this is an example of how we used enigma codes in our trailer. Because of theyoung actors used throughout the trailer and its theme of bullying I think that we would entice ayoung audience because they can relate to the characters and are aware of the situations theyexperience.
CONCLUSIONI believe that we used narrative very successfully in our teaser trailer in terms of enticing the audience by leaving the narrative restricted and open. Our trailer briefly introduced the audience to the main character and empathisedthe theme of bullying that would appear in the film without actually giving a lot away about the story and ending of the film, the audience can only infer that the victim gets his revenge in some way.
