What is Corrosion? • Corrosion may be regarded as the deterioration of materials, specifically metals, by chemical interaction with their environment • It is the electrochemical oxidation of metal in reaction with an oxidant such as oxygen • Corrosion can be locally concentrated to form a pit or crack, or it can extend across a wide area corroding the surface more or less uniformly • It brings about the degradation of the useful characteristics of materials and structures including strength, appearance and permeability to liquids and gases

What is Corrosion? • The consequences of corrosion are innumerable and diverse and the effects of these on the efficient operation of equipment or structures are often more critical than the simple loss of a mass of metal • Few of the consequences are noted below: – Reduction of metal thickness leading to loss of mechanical strength – Hazards or injuries to people arising from structural failure or breakdown – Reduced value of goods due to deterioration of appearance – Loss of time in availability of profile-making industrial equipment – Perforation of vessels and pipes allowing escape of their contents and possible harm to the surroundings – Contamination of fluids in vessels and pipes – Loss of technically important surface properties of a metallic component – Mechanical damage to valves, pumps, etc, or blockage of pipes

How to prevent corrosion? • Prevention of corrosion can be controlled in different ways, of which few are noted below:- – Conditioning the metal: This can be carried out in two ways: • Coating the metal for the sake of interposing a corrosion resistant coating between metal and environment • Alloying the metal to produce a more corrosion resistant alloy – Conditioning the corrosive environment: This can be carried out in two ways: • By removal of oxygen – Eliminating oxygen can reduce the chances of occurrence of corrosion • Applying Corrosion Inhibitors - A chemical additive, which, when added to a corrosive aqueous environment, decreases the rate of metal wastage – Electrochemical control : The rate of corrosion reactions may be controlled by passing anodic or cathodic currents into the metal

Corrosion Inhibitors • Historically, inhibitors manifest a great acceptance as the only way to fight against corrosion problem in the industries owing to its superior anticorrosive properties. • Corrosion Inhibitors can be categorized with respect to their chemical nature as organic or inorganic and the mechanism of action as anodic, cathodic or mixed. • Anodic inhibitors play its role by forming an oxide film on the metal surface resulting in a large anodic shift of the corrosion potential. • This shift force the metallic surface into region of passivation and hence they are referred to as passivator, whereas cathodic inhibitors slow down the cathodic reactions to limit the diffusion of reducing ions to the surface of the metals. • On the other hand, mixed inhibitors work by reducing both anodic and cathodic reactions.
