  • 1. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), The Building Block Of Varied Items We All Take Advantage Of In the modern world plastic is all around us, from the computer cabling that connects us to the internet, to the electrical wiring and conduits that run through our homes and the places we work, to the endless plastic pieces on the consoles of our vehicles. The majority of plastics are made from PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) and developed by PVC compounders in plants around the world and throughout the US. Just about any kind of non-metal piece, pipe or conduit begins as a PVC compound and is created using a template. Chemical engineers are able to vary the chemical properties of vinyl compounds to produce rigid PVC compounds that don't bend easily or flexible PVC that wraps around other materials. The applications for PVC plastics are varied and infinite and include residential, commercial and industrial products including: Automobile Components - shifters, gaskets for doors, window and sunroof seals, dashboard moldings, trim pieces, wiring Manufacturing - handles, grips, hoses, tubing, knobs, suction cups, grommets, parts Medicine - tubing, flexible tubes, food IVs. Plastics used in medicinal applications use medical grade PVC compounds created to provide safe and sanitary environments. Building/Construction - weather stripping, window sealing, outside trimming pieces Cables & Wiring - appliance wiring, communications cables, automobile cabling and wiring Electrical - power supply cording, wiring harnesses, boots for battery terminals, shields Consciousness for the environment in today's world have spawned the development of phthalate free PVC compounds that are safer to utilize in toys and plastic items involved in food processing.
