The precautions that you are able to take can prevent a fire from occurring and help you react properly to any fire that should start up in your kitchen. Determine a minimum age for cooking in your kitchen and make sure that anyone that needs supervision in the kitchen gets it. Having an adult in the kitchen at all times is a great way to ensure that accidents occur less frequently and are taken care of. As you teach children to cook, instill safe cooking practices in them. Make sure that they understand the risks that are apparent when they are cooking and how to mitigate those risks to ensure that they are able to cook safely. The towels in the kitchen should be kept away from the flames and the hot surfaces. It is easyfor towels or other flammable items to get in the flames or even on extremely hot surfaces andthen ignite and start a fire in the kitchen.Whenever you have pots or pans on the stove, it is important that the handles are turned towardthe inside of the stove. If they are turned toward the outside of the stove, you will find that therisk of them being bumped or the risk of having something spill will increase.Make Sure You are Always in the KitchenAs you are cooking in the kitchen, you should make sure that you are always in the kitchen. Itcan be easy to justify leaving the kitchen for a few seconds, but in those few seconds somethingin your kitchen could ignite and you would find a fire burning when you got back.Even the clothes that you are wearing when you cook can bedangerous. When you know that you are going to cook, you shouldbe sure that you wear clothing that stays close to your skin to ensurethat it does not get in your way as you cook.If you have loose fitting sleeves or you have clothes that can getcaught in a flame, you can put yourself in a very dangerous situation.Should your clothes catch on fire it is important that you do not run
but that you put the flame out by getting it under water or rolling on the ground. When you run you will find that you will be fueling the fire rather than putting it out. Get theflame under water or lay down and squelch the flame to ensure that it does not continue to spreadon your clothes and do more damage.Although cooking can be dangerous, if you take the proper precautions you can ensure that youminimize the chance of any fire damage. Take time to learn fire safety while cooking and thenteach the other cooks in your home to ensure that everyone has the knowledge that they need.
