  • 1. The Destructive Tornado { Dallas Burton, 1/9/2014
  • 2.  A tornado is a spinning violent, spinning air column that is connected to the base of a cumulonimbus cloud. A tornado is formed by the combination of cold and warm air during storms, and as the spinning spiral of air approaches the ground, a condensation funnel will make it visible. A few minutes after the rear flank downdraft has reached the ground, a tornado will form. Tornado Formation
  • 3.  The primary cause of a tornado is the mixing of various temperatures and humidity. The cold, dry Canadian winds going south meet the warm, moist winds from the Gulf of Mexico and form a dry line. The dry air piles on top of the moist air that is trying to rise, which causes the trapped moist air to rotate between the two air masses. Once the warm air finally breaks through, the cold air sends it spiraling upwards, the warm air will begin progressively spinning faster, up to speeds of 100 mph and it will go to heights of more than 10 miles.
  • 4. Tornado Alley The most common place for a tornado to occur in the U.S is the place where all the requirements for a tornado come together, in Tornado Alley, which takes up a lot of the Great Plains area.
  • 5.  The ideal place for a tornado to appear is a very flat area, like the Great Plains. The reasoning for this is because there is nothing to obstruct the winds in the Great Plains, which gives the wind plenty of room to spiral and form tornadoes.
  • 6.  The first requirement needed for a tornado to form is a combination of cold dry air and warm moist air to create a thunderstorm. The next condition is a wind shear, causing the rotation of the wind to change with altitude, giving the spiraling effect needed to create a tornado Tornado Conditions
  • 7.  A tornado can do massive damage to the environment in a multitude of ways. One of those ways involves the tornado killing a large amount of animals, disrupting the entire ecosystem of an area. They can also completely destroy trees, which is a big hit to the environment because of how long it takes trees to grow.
  • 8.  A big issue with tornados is how they can contaminate water, because water is an essential part for the survival of plants, animals, and even humans. Tornadoes also start fires because of the destruction in towns that a tornado passes through
  • 9. A tornado can reek serious havoc on human towns and other manmade things that help humans live their daily lives. It is generally normal for surrounding farms to be destroyed. Damaged power lines and gas leaks can cause serious fire damage. Along with destruction, tornadoes can put the economy of a town into a frenzy because of the costs needed to rebuild and because of the destruction of the farms putting the market into an unbalance.
  • 10.  One common way of protecting yourself against tornados is to go into your basement or cellar. Modern houses are built to offer some protection against tornadoes and other natural disasters, so going outside to escape a tornado is a very bad idea. If you have a sturdy roof, it will keep the rest of the house from falling apart.
  • 11.  While tornadoes are extremely destructive towards human property and the environment, efforts have been taken to protect the actual lives of people
  • 12.  The formation of tornadoes can be predicted through various means. Because they can look at the pattern of past tornadoes, they can see what temperature direction and wind speed will contribute to the development of the tornado. Another method is using a doppler radar to see the formation of tornadoes.
