  • 2. 23rd Annual NARPM Training Program 1 Inventory of Site Data  Identify what type of data will be collected throughout the lifecycle of the project. Include all possibilities.  Groundwater, lithologic, geologic, sedimentary, hydrogeologic, air, surface water, sediment surface, sediment subsurface, vadose zone, parameters, time series, demographic, municipal, treatment data, GIS, biological, field conditions (example weather, well condition, time, etc…)
  • 3. 23rd Annual NARPM Training Program 2 How much data will you collect over the lifetime of the site? Is your data management approach scalable?  RPMs collect data to answer specific questions. Answers to these questions generate new questions.  Lifecycle of a Superfund Site: 20-30+ years  Goal 1: Prevent exposure and the migration of contaminates offsite  Goal 2: Identify nature and extent  Goal 3: Remedy  Goal 4: Remediation and successful execution of remedial objectives  Goal 5: Demonstrate RAOs have been achieved

Is your data management approach scalable?  Data management at simple sites versus complex sites  Factor in uncertainties  ARARs change – ex: State changes an MCL thus requiring ROD amendments and new data tracking across the site  New COCs become a concern ex: 1,4 Dioxane  New issues are discovered ex: Vapor intrusion at groundwater sites  Community can change ex: your once rural site is now a quaint suburb or a sleepy community wakes up
  • 5. 23rd Annual NARPM Training Program 4 What is the data growth rate? How much data will you be collecting throughout each phase of the project?  Superfund sites “live” a long time. Groundwater sites vs. Mine Sites vs. Facility sites. Itemize conceptually the beginning, middle and end of data collection for various site categories.  How large of an area does your site cover?  Does the site impact a resource of great interest?  Does the site impact drinking water?  Is the site located in a residential area? Is the site on tribal land or adjacent to tribal land?  Simple Site vs. Complex Site

How much data will you be collecting throughout each phase of the project?  Did human exposure occur at your site?  Will you need to sample private residences/property?  Data management for community involvement  Continuous monitoring vs. one time sampling  Is it easy to determine the fate and transport at your site?  Data can grow at an exponential rate. Does your site data have a history of exponential growth? If so, plan for that trend to continue until the curve flattens.
  • 7. 23rd Annual NARPM Training Program 6 What do you want the data to do for you (i.e. why are you collecting it)?  Know what you want to show and do your best to achieve that goal.  Ex: M52 – 3D visualization with an eye to answering questions on fate and transport, sensitivity of groundwater flow to pumping  Ex: Navajo – Maps showing radioactivity levels and metals concentrations help determine clean up actions  Ex: SFV – 3D model showing everything will help EPA determine effectiveness of the remedy, full extent of contamination, fate and transport, determine appropriate RAOs
  • 8. 23rd Annual NARPM Training Program 7 Know who controls the data and your needs for access  Do you know how your data is stored and maintained?  How do you (RPM) want to interact with your data; Pro user vs. RPM only wanting results and analysis  What is your contractor’s role in managing the data vs. your role  What are PRPs doing with the data? If your contractor or PRP disappears is the data still accessible?

(contract, project, etc..)  Lists existing data providers and data users
