Transcripts - Nasa laser probe will map earth’s forests in 3D

  • 1. What’s this all about? NASA (the National Aeronautics and Space Administration) is regularly featured in the world’s media for their advanced technology, discoveries and innovations and this week is no different. The announcement that they are launching a laser-based probe for the International Space Station that will study the Earth’s forests in 3D has captured the interest of many space enthusiasts.
  • 2. The study explained The project is the first of its kind and will be the only systematic probe of our planet from space. The investigation will likely take around 4 years and is predicted for completion in the year 2018. Remote technology will be used to measure distance by illuminating the target, then analysing the volume of light it reflects back.
  • 3. What are we hoping to learn? Once this has been established, researchers will be able to estimate more accurately how much carbon would be released if the planet’s forests were destroyed and also how many new trees would need to be planted to counter the harmful effects of emissions.
