A licensed social worker, Emily Hershenson belongs to various professional organizations, including the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). NASW unites more than 132,000 professional social workers with the common goal of enhancing the well-being of individuals from underserved communities.
  • 2.  In early March, NASW announced its new alliance with the Campaign to Change Direction, a national initiative begun by the nonprofit organization Give an Hour to address the stigma surrounding mental illness and behavioral health issues. Through the new partnership, NASW joins 50 other partner agencies in spreading information about the signs of emotional distress and the importance of seeking timely care from a mental health professional.
  • 3.  The new partnership was formally announced in early March at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. Guest speakers included First Lady Michelle Obama and Bruce Cohen, the producer of the film Silver Linings Playbook. Approximately 1 in 5 American adults - more than 42.5 million - has a diagnosable mental health condition, with more than half showing symptoms before age 14.
