  • 1. Popular places to visit in and around Trivandrum Trivandrum city in God’s own country has many places to see. They range from temples sewn with history, temple festivals celebrated for 10 days and waterfalls from the reservoir. All this combined with activities such as boating, swimming and trekking makes the tour, a remarkable one. Kerala offers a lot to get ourselves mesmerized in its beauty. Every corner there is something which makes us go awe. One can indulge in many activities like a wildlife safari, cruise in the backwaters or attend one of the temple festivals. The list of attractions is endless. Let us just have a look at the attractions around Thiruvanthapuram. Neyyar dam on the Western Ghats This is a dam on the Neyyar River located at the foot of the Western Ghats. This is very popular and scenic picnic spot. Activities around this place would include boating and yoga. This place serves as a home to the Sivananda Yoga Ashram where courses in yoga and meditation are offered. Boats can be hired to view the forests surrounding the reservoir. The wildlife in the forest includes wild elephants and sambar deer. If travelling by air the nearest airport is Thiruvanthapuram International Airport and the nearest railway station in Thiruvanthapuram railway station. One can also avail the bus service from Thiruvanthapuram to reach the dam. Anchuthengu: First settlement of East India Company This place 40 km to the north of Trivandrum city is of historic importance. The first settlement of the East India Company was established here. The place still holds the remains of the English fort. Local attraction would be churches built by St. Francis Xavier and a boat club. Also there are boats to sail across the river Veli. Meenmutti and Kombaikani Waterfalls The Neyyar reservoir has two waterfalls named as Meenmutti and Kombaikani. Located at a distance of 2km both can be reached by a trek through the dense forests. Permission to visit the falls should be availed from the forest department and a guide will be sent along to visit the falls. Sarkaradevi Temple Located to the north west of Thiruvanthapuram district, the main deity of this temple is Bhadarkali. This is one of the most important temples due to the famous kaliyoot festival which is celebrated in the month of March. It is a 9 day long festival where during the first 7 day story visualizations of the war between Darika and Bhadrakali are enacted. The story goes as on the 8th day Bhadrakali goes in search of Darika but returns empty handed. This is celebrated as ‘Mudi uzhichil’ where the blessing of the deity is offered to the devotees directly. On the 9th day ‘Nilathil poru’ is celebrated where as per the story
