  • 1. Page 1 of 4 PRESIDENT MUSEVENI AND THE EVIL ALLIANCE In the last week all opposition party leaders of Uganda converged in Nairobi Kenya to meet with the country’s opposition leader Mr. Raila Amolo Odinga. The motive of the initiative was to from a united front against Uganda’s strongman President Yoweri Museveni. Also in the meeting was a personal assistant to Dr. John Magufuli, Tanzania’s front running presidential candidate in that nation’s October 25th elections. Now this united approach to resolving Uganda’s political question is very interesting. Most important is participation of Tanzania. Tanzanias are a highly politicized lot, thanks to the mentorship of the founding President Mwalimu Julius Nyerere. The outgoing Tanzania President, Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, has largely been isolated in the East Africa affairs at the instigation of Uganda’s Museveni. He knew that Kenya was just being used to deepen the isolation on him. So he made sure his farewell foreign trip was made to Kenya in which he addressed a joint meeting of the two houses of Kenya parliament, and had the opportunity to explain that Dr. Magufuli’s closeness to Raila was more of a personal affair and should not prove a concern to anyone. “We shall always be brothers.” Indeed Museveni cannot blame anybody for this East African opposition solidarity against him. He started it all, in 2003, backing the Kenya government against the opposition leader Raila Odinga. Since then Museveni has been an active advisor to the Kenya government on the way to handle opposition. Finally, the Uganda opposition has realized that this was the way to go. Alone they cannot beat Museveni, and genuinely require regional and international support to supplant the highly entrenched dictator. In his usually simplistic manner devoid of political thought, kenya’s Deputy President Wiliam Ruto took advantage of the occasion to run to Uganda to meet Museveni and declared the futility of this joint opposition consultation. To

But it is telling that Raila has beaten the Kenya government in elections twice, while the Ugandans have always been defeated by Museveni. They wanted Raila to unite them against their foe, realizing that Raila has united Kenya’s 40 tribes against the vote stealing clique in government. Finally they know that Raila has got international connections, which are crucial for election funding. In one of the elections, in 2007, Museveni had to send forces into Kenya to help quell discontent against election rigging. In Uganda itself, Museveni has always capitalized on Uganda’s dark political past to scare his people into backing him. The atrocious reign of the barbaric dictator Idi Amin Dada, has made Ugandans opt for anything as long as it comes along with peace. Using such scares Museveni had managed to play with Ugandans’ psychology and continue ruling for 30 years. But a young generation has emerged in Uganda quite unaware of Amin’s bestialties. This lot wants genuine democracy, and an end to police state that Uganda continues to be. Even the army is divided and tired of Museveni’s dictatorial and selfish leadership. Several senior and influential generals have left in a huff, as Museveni attempts to turn the army into a family affair, controlled by his son Muhoozi, the head of presidential guards whom he wants to be president after him. One of the reasons Museveni loved Uhuru Kenyatta is that he saw his son in that role of Uhuru in his country. So he has remained a very close confidant of the Kenyan president. Museveni’s uncalled for adventure in South Sudan has further divided his army, many of whose members have been killed in that desolate country. Dozens of gunships have been destroyed as well as equipment, while Ugandan people who saw South Sudan as a business opening have been sorely disappointed. They see the war as completely unnecessary and orchestrated by Museveni and South Sudan Salva Kiir for purely egoistic reasons. South Sudan’s is his personal war, and he has a gullible ally in
  • 3. Page 3 of 4 President Salva Kiir Mayardit, a myopic and sectarian leader by all standards. And so he has ruined his country, simply like that. We should forget the fact that both Kiir and rebel Riak Machar are responsible for atrocities in their country. If the French reasoned like that, President Alassene Quattara would not have liberated Ivory Coast and taken it to such new economic heights. The source of all trouble in South Sudan is Kiir and Museveni in the new agreement for peace Museveni was ordered to remove his troops from Sudan in 45 days. At first he dithered, saying his equipment in South Sudan is so lethal and elaborate it can only be removed under cover of darkness. The United States has always disappointed people when it comes to Uganda. Museveni is very cunning, and will always draw them to his narrative. For example it is surprising nobody is bothered that Uganda sent troops and equipment to South Sudan in the first place. Nobody has ascertained or cares to do how many of the troops are there? And with America’s surveillance capacity nobody seems to make sure this equipment that can only be removed at night is what! Museveni has been known to change uniforms when the occasion suits him. Shall we take care his soldiers do not just turn out in South Sudan fatigues instead of leaving? No wonder Kiir Mayardit has designed new ways of making himself relevant by creating new regions of the country. Principally, Museveni is responsible for the defiance solidarity and coalition existing in East Africa, involving satellite states like Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya and of course South Sudan. Tanzania felt too big and too mature to be roped into such a parochial alliance, and Museveni duely took advantage of Kenya’s lame duck leadership. The agenda of this alliance seems to be to entrench impunity and sticking to power. In their dark schemes they have managed to handsomely suck in South Africa. South Africa is still immersed in the African natonalism ideology, and they have smartly taken advantage of this to rope it in. So South Sudan is being raped and South Africa, believing so much in Museveni’s postulations, remains mum, with all the power they

Everybody knows what happened, as South Africa’s foreign policy is almost non-existent. So pitiable, for a country which has benefitted so much from the others’ foreign policy positions.
