Nano Fuel Additives - Patent Analysis Report

This report covers patent analysis on types and applications of nano fuel additives, its research momentum and key intellectual property indicators. There is considerable difference between the Chinese and US share in application and patents. Chinese applicants accounted for the largest number of patents filed throughout the world. Only 5 (CN, US, JP, WO, EP) out of the total 17 patent offices have reported growth over the last decade. China has recorded double digit growth between 2011-2013. Nano particles is an area where companies have a scope of carrying out research as most of the companies focus on few of the total nano particles used as fuel additives. In spite of the fact that Chevron has smaller portfolio than the major companies; it can be seen that companies like Shell and UOP have cited its records indicating a likely overlap in their R&D focus. This report was prepared using PatSeer and Patent iNSIGHT Pro.

  • 2. Nano Fuel Additives: Overview • Nano Fuel Additive technology is a new concept of reduction of friction and wear through the use of nanotechnology • Transportation is one of the biggest sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Many people have advocated a change in consumer behaviour as the best way to reduce consumption. an approach which has seen more activity is on the fuel production side. Fuel formulations and additive packs are now being designed to improve fuel consumption and reduce harmful emissions • Fuel additives have been one of the most prolific innovations of liquid engineering as well as material science giving natural fuel sources additional properties which help us drive that little extra out of them. Whether it’s an additive to alter a fuels burn rate, increase surface area, prevent corrosive effects or simply color, innovators have developed a range of additives over the years which give these fuels an added property which serves a pressing need from consumers © 2014 Gridlogics. • 3. Search Strategy and Sequence of steps Using PatSeer database a sequence of steps was used to create search query. The table below shows sequence of steps we followed. We combined keyword with relevant IPC, CPC, US and Japanese Classes to restrict the result set to relevant records. The results were then collapsed by Simple Families. The publications included in the report are updated as of 15th November 2014. Search Search Queries Results 1. TAC:(nano*) 552345 Increase relevance of results by restricting it to the main IPC/CPC/US/FI classes for fuel additives and related technologies 2. TAC:(nano*) AND (IC:(C10L9* or C10L1*) or CPC:(C10L9* or C10L1*) or UCMN:(044) or FI:C10L*) 1229 Irrelevant records were excluded by removing unwanted terms 3. • 7. Top Companies (By Individual Publications) The chart shows top 20 companies by individual records in nano fuel additives. The count represents the number of individual publications. It can be seen maximum records are owned by Cerion Technology followed by Afton. © 2014 Gridlogics. All Rights Reserved
  • 8. Top companies (Simple Family) The chart shows records for top 20 companies collapsed by simple families in nano fuel additives. The count represents the number of simple family members. It can be seen General Electric which is not one of the top 20 applicants in overall publications appears in the top 20 in this chart. Same holds true for Massachusetts Inst Technology. © 2014 Gridlogics. All Rights Reserved
  • 9. Priority Country Map – Where is research being done ? The map shows the geographical spread of patents first filed in nano fuel additives. It shows perfect indication of where innovation is taking place. It can be seen US has 429 filings closely followed by China and Japan with 273 and 50 filings respectively. The strength of the colouring represents the proportion of patent publications. © 2014 Gridlogics. All Rights Reserved
  • 10. Publication Trend across key countries in last 10 years Chart shows year wise publications for key publication countries. It can be seen that publications in US and China appeared around 2007 with a steady increase in 2010. There was an spike in increase in publications in China whereas in US, these tapered off. © 2014 Gridlogics. All Rights Reserved
  • 11. Companies across different Nanoparticles The chart represents the technology spread of patent portfolios of top 20 companies across various nanoparticles.
