• 3. Select 2 pieces of equipment from topic #1 and explain what each piece is used for in gymnastics
The vault is used for vaulting. They hurdle onto a springboard and spring onto the vault with their hands. The vault used to be almost like the boys pommel horse, a lot of gymnastics were getting injured so they made the vault longer and wider. It almost looks like a tongue.
The Balance Beam is used to show your skill and balance while performing tricks. The balance beam used to not have very much cushioning.
http://visual.merriam-webster.com/images/sports-games/gymnastics/gymnastics/balance-beam.jpg
http://www.robbinssports.com/sporting-goods-store/images/american-athletic-gymnastics-vaulting-anchor-mat.jpg
• 4. Describe how polymers have improved the vault
at the 2000 Olympics, gymnasts either rammed into the horse's front end, or had bad landings after having problems with their hand placements during push-off. International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) re-evaluated and changed the apparatus, citing both safety reasons and the desire to facilitate more impressive acrobatics. Polymers have improved this piece of equipment by making it longer and wider, also by putting a layer of foam inside it. This was done for the gymnasts in case they messed up.
http://www.robbinssports.com/sporting-goods-store/images/american-athletic-gymnastics-vaulting-anchor-mat.jpg
• 5. Describe the history and the evolution of the vault
Alexander the Great and his Macedonians are said to have practiced mounting and dismounting on a wooden horse. In the fourth century Vegetius describes Roman soldiers practicing on a wooden horse in his “Overview of the Roman Army”. In the early 19th century, when Jahn, regarded as the father of gymnastics, was alive, there were three different kinds of horses on the Hasenheide in Berlin: One very close to reality with a head and a tail, one made of leather without a tail but with an ascending neck and the wooden "Schwingel" (fescue-grass) a word which F.L. Jahn, who detested the use of foreign words in German, had created to avoid the originally French word of Voltegieren. The latter developed into the Olympic apparatus of pommel horse
http://www.robbinssports.com/sporting-goods-store/images/american-athletic-gymnastics-vault-padded-runway.jpg
http://www.gymmedia.com/Ghent2001/appa/vault/history_va.htm
• 7. Describe how polymers have improved the balance beam
The Beam is covered with Synthetic Suede. The synthetic Suede has polymers in it. The Suede makes the beam softer.
http://www.stickitbalancebeam.com/BuildGymnasticsBalanceBeam.html
