Congress of North
Directly arming the Kurds will help bring an end to the war with ISIS.
Kurdish National Congress of North America advocates for Congress to directly arm the Kurdish
Pershemerga as they have demonstrated to be most efficient force against ISIS.
Washington D.C, April 14, 2015: The Kurdish National Congress of North America (KNC) strongly advocates for the
United States and other countries to directly arm and assist the Kurds of northern Iraq in the fight to destroy ISIS. The Kurdish
Peshmerga Forces have proven to be the best fighting force so far, along with their fellow Kurds in Syria, in pushing back ISIS
from making further gains in the region.
We ask the United States to help bring an end to this horrible war and speed up the flow of arms and equipment to
the Kurdish Peshmerga so that they can swiftly deal with the enemy and restore stability to the region.
The KNC also advises that by sending arms via Baghdad to the Kurds has been ineffective and that Prime Minister Al-Abadi
needs to unite all the peoples of Iraq to allow them to live in peace.
The KNC asks members of the House of Representatives to co-sponsor a bill introduced on March 26 2015 by U.S. Rep. Ed
Royce (R-CA), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and U.S. Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY), the Committee’s Ranking
H.R. 1654 is a bipartisan bill that would allow the United Staes to provide arms directly to the Kurdistan Regional
Government. The legislation, which largely mirrors legislation introduced last year (H.R. 5747), provides temporary authority for
President Obama to provide weapons directly to the 190,000 strong Iraqi Kurdish Peshmerga Forces fighting ISIS on the
On September 18, 2014, Secretary of State John Kerry testified to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs about the provision
of direct military assistance to the Kurds, noting: “We have to send it to the government [in Baghdad] because that’s the U.S.
law. If you want to change it, fix it, we invite you…"
Press Release for the bill from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
