Transcripts - National Energy Conservation Day

  • 1. National Energy Conservation Day AHMEDABAD December 14, 2014
  • 2. The Background • Celebrated every year in India on 14th December • The Energy Conservation Act executed in 2001 by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) – a constitutional body under GOI, which helps developing policies & strategies to reduce energy use. • The Act aims to employ professional, qualified & energetic managers and auditors having expertise in managing and implementing energy, efficiency projects.
  • 3. 75 % of all world water is used for energy generation
  • 4. Why Energy Conservation – Indian context • @ 70 % of India’s energy generation capacity is from fossil fuels (Largely Imported). – 40 % from Coal – 24 % from crude oil & – 6% from natural gas • By 2030, India’s imports for energy generation to exceed 53 % of country’s total energy consumption
  • 5. • The exact means of energy conservation is using less energy by avoiding unnecessary uses. • Using energy efficiently is very necessary to conserve it for future usage. • Energy conservation should be rooted in the behavior of every human being to get more effect .
  • 6. Home Energy Uses Heating and Cooling Tips • Raising the thermostat temperature costs you a lot. Better to put on another layer of clothing. • Lower the heat/cooling by 10--15 % at night or when not at home & save @ 10% a year on bills. • Install a programmable thermostat. • Keep heating /air conditioning filters clean for better efficiency. Check them once a month . • Keep air vents and returns unblocked & clean. • Turn ventilation fans off when they’ve done their job. • Get heating/cooling system checked annually. • Use heating/cooling unit of appropriate size for better efficiency • Use fans in conjunction with AC to spread cooled air more effectively.
  • 7. Cooking tips • Keep lid on pots and pans while cooking to keep heat in pan for faster cooking & less energy use • Use proper size pan on stove top burner. All the food will be cooked equally and all the heat is used to heat the pan, not the space around it. • Cook as many things as possible at the same time. • Keep oven door closed while cooking. Opening the door allows heat to escape & requires more energy • Don’t over-cook food. Over-cooking consumes extra energy that is not needed. • Microwave foods when possible. Cooking with a microwave is fast and energy efficient.
  • 8. Water Heating tips • Repair leaky faucets to save litres of water in a short period of time. • Use cold water when possible. Do wash clothes in cold water. Most detergents clean just as well with cold water. • Insulate water heater and pipes. Be careful not to cover the thermostat. • Reduce your daily use of water. If you leave water running while washing dishes, shaving or brushing teeth; its like pouring money down the drain. • Install low-flow faucets and showerheads. Bathing uses the most hot water in an average household.
  • 9. Refrigerator tips • Keep the coils clean to save energy use. • Keep the door closed. When the door is open the temperature can change 10-20o. The longer the door is open, the harder the refrigerator has to work to get the food as cool as it needs to be. • Put food in containers with lids. Uncovered foods release moisture & make compressor work harder. • Let food cool to room temperature before placing it in the refrigerator. • Make sure door seals are airtight. • Set temperature of refrigerator at 37-40o F. • Keep the refrigerator defrosted.
  • 10. Lighting tips • Turn lights off in any room you’re not using • Change incandescent bulbs to compact fluorescent lights [CFLs] • Take advantage of day-light • Keep bulbs clean to ensure maximum light is being emitted.
  • 11. Other Energy Conservation Tips • Seal cracked or broken windows with clear tape. If the window pane is broken it should be replaced. • Seal electrical outlets & switches on walls. This can be done with gaskets made especially for sealing these areas. • Keep window and doors closed when heating or cooling system is on. • Caulk and seal air leaks where plumbing, ducting, or electrical wiring penetrates walls, floors and ceilings. If you can feel a cool draft coming from a window / door in wintertime, place weather strip around those doors or windows. • Use nature’s energy. • Landscaping is a natural way to help keep your home more comfortable and reduce energy bills.
  • 12. Don’t Forget • Be Energy Smart- Energy saved means Money saved. • Be Comfortable- By making your home more energy efficient, it will be warmer in cold winter months and cooler in the hot summer months. • Be Healthy- Keep your family healthy by keeping the home free from lead contaminated dust. – Keep indoor air quality healthy . • Be Safe- Practice good safety habits around your home. – Keep smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in proper working order so they can protect you and your loved Ones.
