  • 1. www.hqbk.com 718-769-2521 Preventing Migraine Headaches Migraine headaches are among the most common conditions affecting people worldwide. According to the National Headache Foundation, about 45 million Americans suffer from chronic headaches, with 28 million suffering from migraines that happen repeatedly. Migraines occur due to a variety of factors such as stress or depression, non-sensory stimulation, alcohol dependence, head injury, food allergies, sinus infections, sleep disturbances and eye strain. The condition is treated with prescription medications, but many people are scared away by the side effects of these drugs. According to a recent report, researchers are developing a new class of medications that work to stop the surge of events that cause migraines in the first place, with minimal side effects. However, these drugs have a long way to before they come to the market. How to Prevent the Pain Cycle? The good news is that making some lifestyle modifications can help prevent and treat this debilitating headache:  Regular exercise – Regular exercise can help as it reduces stress and releases pain relieving chemicals. A Cephalalgia study found that exercise may be an option for the preventative treatment of migraine in patients who do not benefit from or do not want to take daily medication. However, avoid sudden, vigorous exercise as this can trigger pain or make it worse.

Also, take your eyes away from the computer at regular intervals to avoid eye strain.  Reduce stress – Migraines can occur due to stress or depression. Relaxation techniques such as tai chi, meditation, and yoga can help reduce stress.  Eat smart – A healthy, nutritious diet is important. However, certain foods can trigger migraines and you should know what these are. Never skip meals and make sure you eat small, healthy meals in between so that you don’t get too hungry. Hunger and dehydration both cause migraines, so make sure you drink plenty of water too.  Sleep right – Not getting enough sleep or having poor sleeping habits are said to cause headaches. Set a regular time for going to bed and waking up, ensuring that you get at least 7-8 hours of sleep. Create the right ambience in the room by making sure it’s quiet and comfortable.  Behavioral modifications – Avoid migraine triggers like alcohol, cigarettes, and caffeine. It’s obvious that your lifestyle has a major impact on your health and therefore even small changes can make a difference. If your headache persists, see a pain management specialist.
