  • 1. THE CONFESSIONS OF NAT TURNER By: Jillian Moore
  • 2. Brief History of TurnerNat was born as a slave, it was all heever knew.He was thought to be a “prophet” byhis family. He personally claimedthat spirits spoke to him.He had knowledge of things thathappened before his birth, as well asseemingly knew how to read withoutbeing taught. His intelligence was uncommon forthat of a slave boy.
  • 3. The “prophecy” that started it all...Nat had actually escaped from his overseer, and returned 30 days later. He claimed that an Angel of the Lord had appeared to him in a dream andshowed him images of “white spirits and black spirits” in an epic battlefilled with bloodshed. The streams ran red with blood, and he viewed it asan earthly judgement day that he was to lead. He prayed to God and askedhow he should perceive this, the next day he saw blood on the corn he wasworking with that showed figures of both white and black men in battle,he took this as God’s confirmation of what he must do. He tells a whiteman of his visions and he is struck down with blood “oozing from thepores of his skin” and repentance and fasting was all the saved him. Thisonly confirmed more Nat’s convictions.
  • 4. “I should arise and prepare myself, and slay my enemies with their weapons.”Nat gathered his friends Sam, Nelson, Willand Jack one evening and put the plan intoaction. They had gathered up enoughpeople to have a considerable force as wellas weapons. They decided no whiteperson, regardless of age or sex, was to bespared. They attacked and killed hisowners entire family, but that was only thestart. Turner and his men traveled mileskilling every white man, woman, and childthat they encountered. The death toll washigh, and Turner felt no signs of stopping.
  • 5. The white men in the road...Nat’s team was met by multiple teams of whitemales that came to fight back over familydeaths, many of them being victims that deathdid not claim fully. The white men aftermultiple tries finally take over Nat’s men, seeing this, Turner hides himself in a cave ofhis own design. One night while leaving hishiding place for water, a dog happens upon hiscave and gives him away. The irony of thissituation? It was two black men that found himand gave him away, not a white man at all.Turner was arrested and in 1831 he wassentenced to death by the court. Turnersrevolt was the first slave revolt to ever be seenin America.
