Transcripts - National MS Society Funds Vitamin D Research

  • 1.  A former FBI special agent, John Guandolo has dedicated himself to the field of counterterrorism and founded UnderstandingTheThreat.com. He also served as an officer in the Marine Corps and a CPR and first aid instructor with the American Red Cross. Alongside his career, John Guandolo supports the work of organizations such as the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. As an organization dedicated to finding cures for multiple sclerosis, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society supports vitamin D research.
  • 2.  The society funded preclinical studies for supplementation of vitamin D and now funds several clinical trials on its use, including the following: -Harvey Checkoway, PhD, works with the National Cancer Institute and the University of Minnesota to compare UVB exposure between people with MS and people without MS. -Ellen Mowry, MD, MCR, leads a study at Johns Hopkins University on the benefits of higher doses of vitamin D versus the current recommended dose.
  • 3.  -At the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, Alberto Ascherio, MD, DrPH, conducts a study on blood samples to evaluate potential connections between vitamin D levels, cigarette smoking, and EBV infection on the progression of MS.
