01 July 2012Narratives of Music Videos LO: To understand the different narratives of music videos and how audiences respond to them
STARTER• What are narratives of music videos like?
Todorov’s Narrative TheoryEquilibrium is restored (however, notexactly back the way it was): thehero defeats the villain Equilibrium: everything is normal Disruption of equilibrium: something upsets the normal balance of life Attempt to repair the disruption: the hero goes on his quest Recognition of the disruption: something effects the hero
Other narrative types/features • Multi-stranded: different ‘strands’ of narratives woven together • Fragmented: different parts of narratives that may not necessarily be woven together in any order • Flashbacks: a segment that portrays something than has happened in the past
Goodwin’s Features• There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals (with visuals using illustration, amplification or disjuncture the lyrics)• There is a relationship between the music and the visuals (again visuals using illustration, amplification or disjuncture the music)• Particular music genres may have their own music video style and iconography• There will be a demand on the part of the record company for a lot of close-ups of the main artist or vocalist• There is likely to be reference to voyeurism, particularly in the treatment of females, but also in terms of systems of looking (screens within screens, binoculars, cameras, etc)• There are likely to be intertextual references, either to other music videos or to films and TV texts
Narratives & Lyrics• Illustration: where the visuals are a literal interpretation of the lyrics• Amplification: where the visuals are a different ‘twist’ to what the lyrics state• Disjucture: where the visuals have no connection to the lyrics Can you think of an example (one that we haven’t looked at in class) of each?
