• 2. DRUG CONSUMPTION AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE
Drug consumption and Substance abuse refers to the harmful or hazardous use of psychoactive substances, including alcohol and illicit drugs.
• 3. DEPENDENCE’S SYNDROM
Dependence syndrome is a cluster of behavioral, cognitive, and physiological phenomena that develop after repeated substance use and that typically include a strong desire to take the drug, difficulties in controlling its use, persisting in its use despite harmful consequences, a higher priority given to drug use than to other activities and obligations, increased tolerance, and sometimes a physical withdrawal state.
• 4. HARMFUL USE
It´s a pattern of psychoactive substance use that is causing damage to health. The damage may be physical (e.g. hepatitis following injection of drugs) or mental (e.g. depressive episodes secondary to heavy alcohol intake).
• 5. HAZARDOUS USE
It´s a pattern of substance use that increases the risk of harmful consequences for the user. In contrast to harmful use, hazardous use refers to patterns of use that are of public health significance despite the absence of any current disorder in the individual user.
• 6. PSYCHOACTIVE SUBSTANCE
It is a drug that can produce mood changes and distorted perceptions.
Psychoactive substances are substances that, when taken in or administered into one's system, affect mental processes, e.g. cognition or affect. This term and its equivalent, psychotropic drug, are the most neutral and descriptive term for the whole class of substances, licit and illicit, of interest to drug policy.
• 7. FACTS AND FIGURES
We know what can and needs to be done to help reduce the burden of psychoactive substance use. Therefore, WHO is committed to assisting countries in the development, organization, monitoring and evaluation of treatment and other services.
76.3 million persons with alcohol use disorders worldwide.
At least 15.3 million persons who have drug use disorders.
• 9. PREVENTION OR WAYS TO ATTACK SUBSTANCE ABUSE
Cooperation from scientific community
Common research
Identify the sources
Household survey
Gather accurate data
Developing a data base
DAWN (Drug Abuse Warning Network)
Apply the latest epidemiology techniques
Monitoring the future
