Natural Pet Foods: Giving Pets What They Deserve in Proper and Balanced Ancestral Nutrition

www.krisers.com | As people in industrialized countries have become more educated about the harmful effects of additives and synthetic chemicals in everyday food sources, a marked shift has taken place toward consuming more natural foods. Pets can also be affected adversely from highly processed foods containing other non-natural ingredients. Weight gain, sluggish behavior and serious health risks like cancer, organ failure and other ailments can occur with pets that receive regular kibble. • 1. Natural Pet Foods: Giving Pets What They Deserve in Proper and Balanced Ancestral Nutrition As so many people in industrialized countries are resisting foods today that are processed and contain food colors, flavorings, hormones or antibiotics, it is safe to say our culture is becoming more aware and educated about the harmful additives and synthetic chemicals found in a variety of available foods. Some food coloring has been linked to adverse behaviors as well as ADD and ADHD in children. Some artificial sweeteners have been linked to seizures and even brain tumors. Hormones like estrogen and progesterone injected into our meat sources have also been linked to breast and prostate cancer as well as early on-set puberty in children. While so many people have switched to diets rich in more natural food sources, sometimes we forget about the health of our pets at home. They, too, can be suffering similar side effects from the processed dog foods we provide and a whole range of potential adverse side effects can occur in a variety of sensitive breeds. According to The Dog Food Advisor, an objective and unbiased review of thousands of dog foods, an ideal dog food should look something like the diet dogs had before humans began domesticating them. A dog’s natural ancestral diet it would have eaten in the wild would be the optimal choice for feeding a dog. Unfortunately, the nutrients in typical dog kibble have very little similarity to the nutrients found in a dog’s natural ancestral diet. Dog food today is packed full of carbohydrates, unlike a dog’s natural diet. It is also grossly insufficient in the percentage of fat and protein a dog needs to stay healthy. When animals do not receive proper nutrients, a seemingly never-ending list of potential health problems can arise. Animals that aren’t getting proper nutrition may become sluggish and inactive, leading to weight problems and other health risks associated with inactivity. Diabetes, damaged joints, bones and ligaments, heart disease, increased blood pressure, difficulty breathing, decreased liver function, digestive disorders, increased cancer risks, skin and coat problems as well as decreased quality and length of life are just a few of the adverse effects of overweight animals. According to one study in 2011, 53% of dogs are overweight or obese—a sobering fact for most pet owners. Natural pet food brands like EVO claim to mimic the natural ancestral diet of pets. Formulated with the highest protein and lowest carbohydrate recipes of grain-free dog and cat food, EVO provides products that are whole and natural. Orijen is another natural pet food company that believes because “dogs and cats are built like their ancestors...they should eat like them too.” Providing food with large portions of whole
