  • 3. OTODECTES CYNOTIS Was only the ectoparasite in ear canal of cats in this area. Otodectes mites live on the surface of the skin in the ear and external ear canal Highly contagious

SYMPTOMS Dark, waxy deposits and exudate in the ear canal Secondary bacterial infections may result in purulent otitis externa. Irritation, inflammation, exudation and crust formation result from the mites Abrasions and scratches on the back side of the ears Crusting and scale on the neck, rump and tail
  • 5. METHODS Identifying the mites within the ear by an otoscope or in samples of exudate taken from the ear.
  • 6. TREATMENT Medication designed to eradicate the mites There are several medications available for the treatment of ear mites. The veterinarian will use anti-parasitic medicine. (ear drops and drops on the neck) Treatment will take up to 4 weeks.
  • 7. MAINTENANCE CARE Owners should be shown how to properly clean the ears. The frequency of cleaning usually decreases over time from daily to once or twice weekly as a preventive maintenance procedure. The ear canals should be kept dry and well ventilated.
