The name (homonymous with the name of animal lion) comes from Löwentaler (which had the figure of a lion on the reverse), silver coin circulated in the Netherlands from the sixteenth century, then became the currency of assessment. The subdivision of leu is ban (plural: bani), 1 leu = 100 bani. Since 1991, inflation has practically removed from use this subdivision of leu.
