Transcripts - National spanish legal education conference 2013 dual degrees

  • 1. Developing an international teaching and research culture through the medium of dual degrees. Louise Taylor, Nottingham Trent University 12th September 2013
  • 2. Nottingham Law School – an overview • We are one of the largest university law schools in the UK, with over 100 academic staff and 2,500 students. • We provide courses for every stage of legal training in our outstanding city centre campus.
  • 3. Nottingham Law School – an overview "Nottingham Law School is one of the leading Law schools in the country, combining the academic and practical approach to teaching Law.“ Lord Saville, former Justice of the UK Supreme Court.
  • 4. Our dual degree provision • Dual degree offered in partnership with Radboud University, Nijmegen. • Year 3 of 4 - Nijmegen students study in NLS for one year and achieve a non-qualifying LLB (Hons) in Legal Studies. • Year 3 of 3 - NLS students study in Nijmegen for one year and achieve a LLM, Masters in European Law.
  • 5. Our dual degree provision • Modules delivered in English. • Students gain an additional qualification without spending extra time and money. • Higher entry points required compared to our normal LLB (Hons) degree.
  • 6. Creating an international teaching culture. • Interchange of staff and students between the two Schools encourages a trade in best international learning and teaching practices. • Curriculum design and student support practices adopt an international focus to accommodate visiting students. • Possibility for Year 2 NLS students to transfer into programme – encourages an awareness amongst the wider student population of the importance of incorporating an international perspective into their degree.
  • 7. Creating an international teaching culture. • We currently run several international summer schools including one in Nijmegen with a focus on the ICC. • The law school in Nijmegen have been reserving places on our summer schools for the benefit of their students. • This gives both Nijmegen and NLS students further exposure to an international learning and teaching environment
  • 8. Creating an international research culture. • Joint NLS/Nijmegen EU funding bid in the area of Insolvency Law. • Possibility for further research and funding collaborations by maintaining our joint critical mass. • Possibility for an international insolvency dual LLM with Nijmegen. This would lead to dual supervision of LLM research with the possibility of increased PhD applications in this field.
  • 9. Challenges. • Increased demands on University infrastructure. • Ensuring sufficient pastoral support for exchange students. • Staff and student reluctance to engage with changes. • Institutional differences in curriculum design and quality assurance practices. • Other institutions entering the market.
  • 10. What lies ahead…
