  • 2. WHAT IS NARRATIVE? • Narrative is storytelling and there are a number of theories about how stories are told in different media which you need to learn

PLOT VS NARRATIVE • Plot = chronological events of a story e.g. the story of the Titanic begins when people board a boar and it ends with the death of Rose • Narrative = the organisation of this story e.g. the film of Titanic begins in the present with the old lady relaying her story before the film has prolonged flashbacks to the past
  • 4. WHAT DOES NARRATIVE MEAN? • The way stories are told and how the meaning is constructed to achieve the understanding of an audience • Narrative story refers to all the events explicitly presented or referred • In film, the narrative is constructed through elements like camerawork, lighting, sound, mise-en-scene and editing
  • 5. NARRATIVE STRUCTURES • Circular • Linear • Open • Closed
  • 6. ALLAN CAMERON • Anachronic – Flashback • Forking Paths – Contradictory narrative, alternative story • Episodic – a series of shorter stories that appear to be disconnected • Split Screen – screen split into two or more times show separate events
