In her playful debut mystery novel, Sandoval deals with much more than selling houses. “I’ve been in real estate for 36 years,” she said. “When the industry imploded a few years back, things were difficult and very scary. I heard about a madam who had just served six months in a country club type jail for running a call girl business. I joked, ‘That’s how I can survive the recession. I’ll become a madam for other broke agents.’” Instead of starting an illegal business, Sandoval wrote a book as if she had. Irreverent and laugh-out-loud, “Cat House: Adventures of a Real Estate Madam” introduces readers to Niki Brooks, Sandoval’s Manolo–clad heroine who finds unique financial opportunities during the Great Recession. As a luxury home real estate broker trying to survive one of the worst bubble bursts in 30 years, Niki is barely hanging on. With her own house under threat of foreclosure and her retirement holdings worthless, she turns from selling houses to selling the world’s oldest profession. “An author acquaintance challenged me to write the story, keeping it funny so that people struggling in any industry would be able to come home after a stressful day, read a little and laugh a lot,” remembers Sandoval. And write she did. While Sandoval notes that “Cat House” deals with risqué subject matters, the book, she shares, is not. “It’s not about running a call girl business,” she says. “It’s about the journey Niki takes to survive. Desperate people do desperate things, but in Niki's case, those things led her to love, forgiveness and growth.” Sandoval is now at work on her second Niki Brooks adventure. “Cat House” Hardcover | 6 x 9 in | 386 pages | ISBN 9781475989427 Softcover | 6 x 9 in | 386 pages | ISBN 9781475989434 E-Book | 386 pages | ISBN 9781475989441 Available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble MK Sandoval lives in Chandler, Ariz., with her husband of 30 years.
