MangoThe mango is thenational fruit of thePhilippines and isconsidered the apple ofthe tropics. It is knownworldwide and is a majorexport product. Ripe oneshave yellow skin andflesh. This is whenmangoes are at theirsweetest. Two varietiesare commonly grown, thesweeter manggang pikoand the fleshier manggangkalabaw. Those fromGuimaras is said to be thesweetest in the world.Other regions in thePhilippines which producelarge quantities ofmangoes for export areZambales, Davao andCebu.
RambutanR ambutan is native toSoutheast Asia and theMalay Archipelago andgrown in Laguna, parts ofMindanao, PanayIsland, Mindoro andBatangas. The name is aMalay word“rambut”, which meanshair. The egg-size fruithas claret skin thatresembles scaly leathercovered with soft red-green spines. Rambutanhas translucent, pearly-white meat coveringbrown seeds.
AvocadoThe avocado is apear-shaped fruit withdark, shiny purple orgreen skin. Thesoft, creamy, thickflesh covers a singleovoid to round seed.The custard-like fleshtastes almost blandand said to lowercholesterol levels.Avocadoes are used incooking, salads, icecream and otherdesserts.
LanzonesLanzones grows inbunches resembling paleblonde grapes with bitterseeds. It is native toWestern Malaysia. Thetartly-sweet firm fruithas about five sectionscovered in cream-coloredskin with white sap thatcan discolor your fingers.Lanzones from Camiguinin Mindanao is said to bethe sweetest and holdsan annual harvestfestival. It also grows inLaguna, parts ofQuezon, Batangas, Cagayan de Oro and Butuan.
DurianDurian is the “king of alltropical fruits”, native toBrunei, Indonesia andMalaysia and grown inMindanao. It has dark khakior dull green skin withthick, short, pointed spinesand a very pungent odor. Itsflesh is golden, sweet andbutter-soft. Some considerthis an aphrodisiac. Durianis made into candiedsweets, ice cream andcakes. Local eaters washoff the taste by placingsome water in the husk anddrinking it. They also washtheir hands on water-filledhusks.
LangkaLangka or jackfruitcomes fromSouthwestern India, SriLanka, Bangladesh andthe Philippines and alsoin Australia. It is thelargest tree-born fruit inthe world, growing up to20 inches in diameterand weigh up to 40 kilos.The yellow fleshconsists of sweet bulbscovering oblong seedsthat are edible whenboiled. It can be eatenraw or sliced and addedto turon, guinatan andmade into jam and addedto halo-halo.
AtisAtis or sugar apple orcustard apple wasintroduced by theSpaniards around 1590.The round fruit is smallwith lumpy dull-greenscales. Atis hassweet, creamy flesh withnumerous black seeds. Ithas a very short shelf lifeand should be eaten assoon as it ripens but issweeter when left toripen on the tree.
WatermelonWatermelons arejuicy, sweet andcrunchy, with plenty ofpits. Watermelongrows on ground-crawling vines, its fruitround or oblong, withgreen skin and with orwithout dark greenwavy stripes.
