  • 1. Bio-Sketch: Michael S. Popson Hello! My name is Michael Popson. I am currently a Senior Undergraduate at Case Western Reserve University in the Biomedical Engineering Program with a focus in Devices and Instrumentation, and I expect to graduate in 2016. I am also a part of the Pre-Health Program, which illustrates that I have a wide background on many different subjects. Recently, I have been working on creating a wheelchair controlled through EMG signals. This would be beneficial for a quadriplegic who has no movement of his/her legs or arms. We could target muscles that are still functionable, and therefore could move the wheelchair. I have other interests as well in the biomedical instrumentation field. Since October 2015, I have worked in the lab of Dr. Michael Jenkins, which looks into Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Imaging. In the lab, I extract hearts from day- 8 old quail which I then use to image using an OCT machine. My head colleagues then run a MATLAB code to process the images and see how light is affected as it reaches lower depths. From this experience, I learned how theory could be applied in real world applications, and I have acquired invaluable interpersonal skills like how to interact with a lab group. I spend my leisure time doing many different activities. I stay fit by working out in my nearby gym and competing in organized sports. Also, I enjoy playing piano. Most importantly, I cherish spending time with my friends and family, as well as supporting my Ohio State Buckeyes. Finally, I appreciate all the travel opportunities I have had in the past, and look forward to traveling in the future.
