  • 2. Facts and Figures The semi-trailer, a key and yet under-appreciated component in carrier activities… In Europe: - There are, on average, 30% more semi-trailers than tractor units.1 - 21% of semi-trailer journeys are unladen.2 - 32% of HGV breakdowns are linked to the tyres3 and in 70% of cases, they occur on the semi-trailer4. - Only around 10% of semi-trailers are equipped with a telematic connection5 . - The average cost of a semi-trailer breakdown amounts to more than €1000, broken down as follows: 50% for tyres and service and 50% in indirect costs, such as driver time, late penalties, and collateral damage to the brakes or bodywork6 . The semi-trailer is an essential and indispensable haulage tool for carriers, but, in stark irony, it is far too often treated as a simple commodity. Indeed, the average TCO of a covered semi-trailer is estimated at €600 per month. 1 Source: CNR, Long distance survey 2013. 2 Source: Bundesamt fur Guterverkehr, November 2013. 3 Source: ADAC https://www.adac.de/produkte/lkwpannenhilfe-mobilitaetsmanagement/news- events/presse/pannenstatistik-halbjahr13.aspx 4 Source: Michelin Euro Assist. 5 Source: Berg Insight Trailer & Cargo container Tracking. 6 Source: Internal study, Michelin.
  • 3. MICHELIN® solutions launches EFFITRAILERTM The innovative answer to the semi-trailer paradox In this context, where the semi-trailer – a key component of transport – is not treated in a manner reflecting its potential value, MICHELIN® solutions has created EFFITRAILERTM , a new support solution for fleet managers. The aim is to improve their economic and quantitative performance by tracking semi-trailers and: - Reinforcing the safety of assets and equipment; - Lowering the cost of owning towed vehicles; - Improving rolling stock maintenance, which becomes more preventive than corrective; - Guaranteeing delivery lead times and demonstrating greater reactivity in response to shippers' requests MICHELIN® solutions offers its commitment to haulage companies to manage their semi- trailers and provide them with the means to plan ahead and react to unforeseen situations in their activity. By reducing downtime for semi-trailers, EFFITRAILERTM enables carriers to improve the safety of their cargo and enhance the reliability of their deliveries. EFFITRAILERTM represents the third innovative solution by MICHELIN® solutions, a subsidiary of the Michelin Group just created in 2013. In real terms, this solution consists of a contractual commitment by MICHELIN® solutions to the benefits which could be generated thanks to improved semi-trailer management. These benefits relate to: - the improved management of semi-trailer tyre pressure; - a geolocation system; - improved management of carrier – loader relations. MICHELIN® solutions has created a complete range of solutions with its partners, to satisfy the current problems faced by European fleets. MICHELIN® solutions has therefore launched EFFIFUELTM on the market, a contractual package deal to reduce fuel consumption, and EFFITIRESTM , an outsourced management solution for tyres, with guaranteed fuel savings if preferred by the customer. The new EFFITRAILERTM solution is part of this value creation strategy, focusing on semi-trailer management. These solutions represent unrivalled innovations in the sense that they are accompanied, contractually, with a clause enabling customers to obtain a refund if objectives are not reached. Such an unequivocal commitment is unique on the market, and demonstrates MICHELIN® solutions' confidence in its value range.
  • 4. Details of the EFFITRAILERTM service by MICHELIN® solutions Building on the experience acquired in fleet optimisation through the EFFIFUELTM and EFFITIRESTM solutions, MICHELIN® solutions is now deploying its know-how with the new EFFITRAILERTM solution for semi-trailers. EFFITRAILERTM is aimed first and foremost at fleet managers with at least 100 semi-trailers, with any brands of tyre on their semi-trailers. The EFFITRAILERTM solution comes with two levels of commitment. A commitment to results: less frequent tyre-related breakdowns, improving safety, enhancing quality of service and optimising costs; A commitment to resources optimising the usage rate of semi-trailers, aiming to improve productivity. Key points EFFITRAILERTM, the third solution by MICHELIN® solutions, represents an innovation in the world of transport and constitutes a notable extension to the traditional Michelin business model, beyond just supplying tyres. Like other MICHELIN® solutions services, EFFITRAILERTM is a "satisfied or get your money back" type offer. With EFFITRAILERTM, semi-trailer fleet managers can now benefit from all the expertise of MICHELIN® solutions in optimising their rolling stock. MICHELIN® solutions promises to improve profit margins for semi- trailers by reducing the number of tyre-related breakdowns and enhancing their usage rate thanks to this innovative service, unique on the market. With EFFITRAILERTM, the logistics analysts of MICHELIN® solutions use telematic tools and monitor pressure in real time, allowing fleets to better manage rolling stock activity, improve safety for people, equipment and the goods carried, optimise their costs and provide a better quality of service to loaders.
  • 5. EFFITRAILERTM : a complete ecosystem EFFITRAILERTM benefits from the know-how of MICHELIN® solutions in terms of vehicle tracking and analysis, real-time pressure management and the development of associated services. In concrete terms, EFFITRAILERTM makes it possible to: - Receive real-time alerts relating to:  Geolocation (in particular POI - Points of Interest): when straying from the route, for example  Tyre pressure  Abnormal downtime  The operation of the EBS (Electronic Braking System),  Any overload - Plan ahead thanks to the real-time geolocation of semi-trailers via a portal accessible to the customer, with schedule tracking, information on the position of the semi-trailer, including whether the trailer is unhooked or towed, real-time cargo tracking… - Optimise operations by accessing regular reports, prepared and analysed by MICHELIN® solutions' supply chain analysts, on the activity and performance of the trailer fleet (e.g., usage rate, mileage, breakdown locations, etc.) - Jointly draft action plans in coordination with the MICHELIN® solutions' supply chain analysts, in order to improve the profitability and efficiency of the semi-trailer fleet How to generate value with EFFITRAILERTM Depending on the problems based by carriers, EFFITRAILERTM by MICHELIN® solutions can be used to activate at least 1 of the 3 main sources of leverage for value: • value relating to improved tyre pressure management thanks to connected TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System): less tyre breakdowns (MICHELIN® solutions commits to reducing tyre-related semi-trailer downtime by up to 50%), extended tyre life cycle, and reduced fuel consumption. • value relating to geolocation: increased semi-trailer usage rate, improved management of sub-contracting, reduced unladen travel, etc. • value relating to improved carrier / loader relations: proactive management of commercial relations, improved goods safety, improved trailer availability for unexpected requests...
  • 6. Case study: potential benefits from several sources If we consider a company with 150 tractors and 200 semi-trailers, facing 60 breakdowns annually for its semi-trailers, a usage rate of 25%, 12% in sub-contracting and 20% unladen travel, the EFFITRAILERTM solution can offer the following potential benefits: • Benefits thanks to improved pressure management o tyre-related breakdowns down by 50% (Michelin solutions' contractual commitment) i.e. 60 x 50% x €1500 (estimated direct and indirect costs for a breakdown) = €45,000 o fuel consumption down by 0.20%, i.e. €9,000 / year • Benefits thanks to the use of semi-trailers o optimised usage rate for semi-trailers (25% - 27%, i.e. 3 trailers less) 3 x €7,000 (annual cost of owning a covered trailer) = €21,000 o optimised sub-contracting budget thanks to improved mileage control and the associated invoicing. o unladen travel reduced by 1%, i.e. €16,000, thanks to tracking. • Benefits thanks to the improved management of carrier – loader relations. Totaling a minimum of € 91,000 of savings from optimized management of the trailer park. The EFFITRAILERTM commercial service by MICHELIN® is currently available in Great Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Austria and will be available throughout Europe from 2016.
