  • 1. National 4 Reading Skills The questions below are designed to further develop your reading skills and help you prepare for the reading assessments in class. Task: You are to read, watch or listen to a textof your choice and answer the questions below. You should complete this sheet for at least 3 different genres of text per term. What genre does your text belong to? (Eg. non-fiction, poetry, comedy, science fiction, fantasy…) What is the purpose of your text? Is it to persuade, to instruct, to inform or to describe and entertain? Who is your text aimed at? Consider age, gender, interests, nationality and background. What are the main ideas in the text? The main idea of a text is best described as what the passage is mostly about or the issue the writer wants you to think about. It might help to list any recurring words. You could look for recurring ideas in the topic sentences of each paragraph. Another technique is to try to sum up the events or ideas in three words. For example, a three word summary of the novella Of Mice and Men might be Dreams – Loneliness – Companionship Identify at least two literary techniques you found in your text and comment on the effect of each. You should show that you can identifyexamples of simile, metaphor, personification, alliteration, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, direct address, repetition … Do you think the text was successful or unsuccessful in presenting its main concerns? Explain your answer with reference to an aspect of the text.
