  • 2. Original ideas Here I state I do not want to create a stereotypical ‘love story’ narrative, however due to style of my filming, choice of song and editing I have found myself conforming to such narrative each time I take the development of my product further. Therefore I have conformed more towards Propp’s character theory, whilst this isn’t extremely clear within my narrative, it is a theory I have taken into account whilst editing, and isn’t an element I’d thought about before so. I took this screen shot off my ‘narrative ideas’ blogger post.
  • 3. I have continued taking inspiration from Barthes narrative codes, as I like how the theorist understands how a meaning of a text can differ for each individual, and so this bases itself upon pragmatics and hidden meanings of the text over obvious meanings – in my music video this could be representations of love with use of candles (cultural codes), and a connection between two people through the use of overlays and cross dissolves. This is something I have kept the same. My narrative does not necessarily contain Todorov’s ‘Equilibrium, Disequilibrium and Resolution’ narrative theory, this is because my narrative is how the two characters are happiest when together (close-up shots, laughing) and when apart are sad (lower key lighting, alone). The narrative of my music video is a reflection of a happy, content relationship, and contains a small minor disequilibrium where at the beginning the male doesn’t want to be with the female – this fits the lyrics “I’m a bad boy, because I don’t even miss her” as the video develops, my narrative is how he realises he does want to be with her – and so ends in a stereotypical manner. Whilst this is a narrative behind my video, it isn’t the main narrative line. Instead I have shots of the two together constantly, overlaying shots of them being alone to contrast the happy state together, and the loneliness when they are alone. I realise now that this must be created, and it does not happen automatically as I previously thought during the pre-production phase.
  • 4. The idea is that ‘free fallin’’ is to be interpreted in a positive manner, that the male is taking a leap into falling in love. This is different as to how I’d originally planned my narrative because this is what I wanted to avoid. By beginning the post-production phase, it’s made me more aware of the necessities of a clear, structured narrative. I understand more how important it is for a narrative to be clear for an audience, both for their satisfaction with the product and understanding. Entering the final section of editing, I am introducing newer footage in order to make my narrative stronger.
  • 5. My narrative In conclusion, I am making it clear what my final narrative decision is, and one that I am trying to portray within my music video: A male deciding he doesn’t want to be with the female (to fit with the lyrics at that time), then realising he does (“I wanna free fall, out into nothing” – meaning into love). It is very simplistic as it is easier and more audience friendly to keep it modernistic and non-complex, also using such a common narrative will mean my audience are more likely to be able to relate to some of the themes within my product, meaning their level of understanding is raised.
