• 2. May 2005

Natalee Holloway, 18, was on a senior trip with other classmates to Aruba when she went missing on May 30 th , 2005.

The teenager from a suburb in Alabama, Mountain Brook, was last seen leaving a night club called Carlos’n’Charlie’s in the town of Oranjestad.

 • 3.

Witnesses at the scene stated that Natalee left in a car with three local men, between the ages of 18 and 25 at around 1:30 a.m.

Her friends said they had pictures of her dancing with young men at the club.

When interviewed, the three men claimed they took Holloway to a beach and then dropped her off at her hotel, the Holiday Inn, at around 2 a.m.

*Natalee’s bags were found in her hotel room, fully packed, the night before she disappeared. She was ready to return on her scheduled flight home the following day.
 • 4.

Two days after her disappearance, it was considered a criminal case by Aruba police and United States officials

The search continued; the only leads were the three men who claimed to have dropped her off at the hotel the night of her disappearance.

However, hotel surveillance did not record Natalee returning to the hotel that night.

More of The Facts
 • 5. The Search Continues

June 6 th , 2005- an expanded search for Holloway continues.

700 volunteers join police in the search, however police say nothing belonging or pertaining to Natalee is being recovered.

However, a judge finds sufficient evidence to hold Nick John, 30, and Abraham Jones, 28 on suspicion of murder and kidnapping in the Holloway case.

 • 6.

The two men who were arrested are detained, and the focus in the search is intensified on the three young men who were with Natalee the night she disappeared.

One of them is named Joran van der Sloot, and he is the son of a high ranking judicial official on the island.

 • 7.

Arrows continue to point to van der Sloot after a witness from the scene the night of Natalee's disappearance says comes forward saying they saw Joran driving to a tennis club across the road from the Marriot at around 2:30 a.m., and that he was trying to hide his face.

 • 8.

Unfortunately, there is not enough substantial evidence to hold Joran in custody, and he is released.

He returns to Holland and attends college, however he remains a key suspect.

 • 9.

Months later, in December of 2007, authorities close the investigation into the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, because the public prosecutor’s office does not have evidence to charge anyone.

However, in January of 2008, Aruban prosecutors announce that they are reopening their investigation into Natalee’s disappearance after hearing Joran van der Sloot’s secretly video-taped confession.
