  • 9. WHY DO WE THINK THIS WILL WORK? OREGANO EVENTS- NAIVASHA PROPOSAL-MAY 2010
  • 10. Examples of Successful International Festivals The Notting Hill Festival/Carnival • In 1958, there were race riots in Nottingham, prompting racist attacks in the Notting Hill area. • In 1959, Claudia Jones, organized an indoor Caribbean Carnival at St Pancras Town Hall. This was broadcast by BBC on its Six Five Special Program. • Later, in the mid 1960’s, Rhuane Laslett, organized an outdoor carnival procession as part of the Notting Hill Summer Festival. • This, outdoor procession is generally viewed as the start of the modern Notting Hill Carnival. Source of information-Anton Shone, Bryn Parry, Successful Event Management, pg 52
  • 11. The Notting Hill Carnival Today this carnival: * Is one of Europe’s largest open air carnivals * Is held yearly on the last Sunday and Monday of August * Attracts about a million attendees/visitors/tourists (local and international)  Is estimated to contribute £93million to the London economy every year. www.thenottinghillcarnival.com

  • 13. The FLOWER ‘glues’ the stakeholders together…… Naivasha Municipal Council Flower Farm Investors Business Community Flower Farm Employees Naivasha Residents
  • 14. Flowers are the economic engine of Naivasha Town, and provide the best opportunity to create an annual festival around them.
  • 15. PROPOSED ACTIVITIES ON THE DAY OREGANO EVENTS- NAIVASHA PROPOSAL-MAY 2010
  • 16. Proposed Activities  Opening Ceremony Since this is the 1st of its kind City event in Kenya, it will be important to have an official protocol led ceremonial opening. This can be further discussed and a Guest of Honor chosen to do so- such as the Deputy Prime Minister- Local Government. (proposed to start at 10am)  Floral Arrangements Competition The event- being a Flower Festival- will entail a floral arrangement competition. The theme of the festival- My Naivasha- will be the driving force behind the floral creations and should be brought to life.
  • 17. Proposed Activities  Judging of the Floral Arrangements We propose to work with the local flower farmers to attract the participation of an international judge assisted by a Nairobi based judge. • 19. BENEFITS FOR NAIVASHA TOWN OREGANO EVENTS- NAIVASHA PROPOSAL-MAY 2010
  • 20. What’s in it for Naivasha Town?  This festival is set to reposition the image of Naivasha Town-from its current negative perception during PEV, to an investor friendly, forward looking, and able to accommodate diverse cultures.  The first theme for the festival- ‘My Naivasha’ aptly captures what the residents of Naivasha currently think of the town and the next strategic step would be to involve all the relevant stakeholders in using this outcome to build a more positive image of the residents and visitors.
  • 21. Tangible Benefits Derived from Events/ Festivals  Economic Benefits – Festivals/events, the world over contribute significantly to the GDP of the local economy- Naivasha would be the centre of this economic activity through local and international tourism.  Social Benefits – Events present a unique platform that bring people together, despite their diversity they are united in the quest to participate in the event.
  • 22. Tangible Benefits Derived from Events/ Festivals  Development/ Infrastructure Implications – Successful annual festivals always have a domino effect on the development/ infrastructure of a town, e.g. the Naivasha business community will need to diversify its offering to accommodate the expected increase in tourists during the festival, through:  More bed & breakfast accommodation  Vendors to the event- chairs, tents, food, drinks  Gift shops
  • 23. Tangible Benefits Derived from Events/ Festivals  Improved Relations with stakeholders – External stakeholders are key in ensuring the success of any event. OREGANO proposes to have a stakeholder meeting- to get buy in from them in regard to the idea. The external stakeholders are: – The business community (banking, hospitality, retail) – Lake Naivasha Riparian Association – Kenya Flower Council – Lake Naivasha Growers Group – The residents of Naivasha
