CHURCH.PRESTON@GMAIL.COM 724-986-4745 www.prestochurch.com 241 Taaffe Place Apt 507 Brooklyn, New York 11205 P R E S T O N C H U R C H To whom it may concern: For the past four years, I’ve dedicated a majority of my time helping run a rapidly growing, creative small business. My architecture education at Pratt empowered me to run with creativity. I’ve been able to utilize a range of skills as a tool box for productivity and problem solving. I was directly involved in designing and fabricating a series of items which have now sold into the thousands. Aside from managing sales, fabrication, and packaging, I was also representing at major trade shows exhibitions and finding solutions to clients needs for custom projects. These included custom castings or reproductions, fine furniture projects and wood finishing, as well as digital design. Currently I am seeking to implement these practices on a larger scale in a professional environment where my value can be mutually beneficial. I can offer a unique perspective on hand made fabrication, design direction, and business management that could be channeled into greater success. I have been influential and successful in design development, sales, and production for a variety of objects and scales. While spending plenty of time with my hands dirty (literally), I was back and forth between creating spreadsheets for inventory, material calculations and estimates, shipping expedition, and customer relations through various web platforms. Implementing digital skills, fabrication experience, and creative initiative is how I intend to be an effective asset to the next operation I am a part of. Working with a small team over the past few years has given valuable understanding of a range of responsibilities and work ethic, from client correspondence and professional fabrication to sweeping floors and cleaning concrete mixers. The time has come to expand on the firm foundation of principles and experience I’ve been fortunate enough to establish. For work samples, prior experience, and contact information I encourage you to browse the included resume and digital portfolio booklet. Please feel free to respond with any questions or interest. I look forward to the next volume of opportunities that I can contribute to and grow from. Sincerely, Preston Church January 2016
  • 2. Managed a Product line for In.Sek including design, fabrication, marketing and sales with exponential growth from 2013-2016 Expedited shipping for hundreds of retail and wholesale orders Provided correspondence support to online customers and negotiated wholesale requests for retailers Fabricated over 1,400 units of concrete merchandise valued at approx $85,000 in revenue from 2014-2015 Designed booth layout and concepts for a mobile studio at the Collective Design Fair in New York in 2015. Concrete products were represented at NYNow and BKLYN Designs in 2015. Wholesale purchases spread to retail locations across the US and into Western Europe and Australia. Notable retailers include the PAMM Shop, The Standard Highline, and the Noguchi Museum. Casted over 20 concrete table tops in varying sizes for new Etsy HQ offices, as well as 40 concrete lighting pendants. Planned and executed over two tons [4,000 lbs] of precast concrete in 2015, including form prep, mixing, pouring, and finishing for products and furniture. Created custom rubber molds for precast products in addition to protype preparation and design Produced detailed calculations for casting procedures to systematize fabrication using spreadsheet analysis. This minimized waste of time and material, maximized profits, and enabled accurate estimates. Consulted and participated in the creative direction and layout of publicity material, packaging, web site development, merchandising, online store design, and copy narratives. Continuously provided creative ideas to update product offerings, add variety to existing pieces, and increase new sales opportunities. IN.SEK Design Production Manager Designer, Fabricator, Sales Rep, Creative Direction 2012-2016 Present from the early stages of this studio startup, I was able to participate in the growth of a creative small business. My contribution of creative intuition, fabrication, technical abilities, and professionalism aided in the significant and rapid expansion of this small business. I’ve worked on projects and orders from clients engaging in personal goods and furnishing, marketing projects and advertisers, corporate gifting, custom design proposals, wholesale merchandise, pop up events, and trade shows. One of the most beneficial aspects of my experience in this evolving post was learning about the moving parts of a company from the ground up. In addition to design and planning, I also spent countless hours in finishing hundreds of squarefeet of fine wood and concrete surfaces. I’ve been able to participate in web development, custom fabrication, trade show exhibition, client meetings, designing to a client’s needs, branding, marketing, packaging, in addition to setting up a new 1900 sq ft manufacturing facility. My focus on fabricating a concrete product line was one aspect of a growing fabrication and design company. Smaller scale products represented a modular vision of conceiving work on a much larger platform. The investigation and questioning of what is architecture, art, commerce, or function opened a door to discovering the implications and limitations [or lack of] of applying our skills and ideas to a larger appropriation.
