The title Poppies in July suggests the beauty , happiness , colour andsunny weather. The speaker is looking at a field of poppies In thesummer.
“Little poppies little hell flames” have to different connotations. The word“Little” suggests the fondness that the poet has with the poppie.“hell flames” suggest danger , evil , death and hell.
The poet seems to be worn out “It exhausts me to watch you” she is trying toescape her physical turmoil and her agitated state of mind. She is expierincingwhat can only be described as clinical depression.She is expierencing a mental state of exhaustion.
“I put my hands among the flames” this quote suggests that Plathwants to be burned by “The flames”
“If my mouth could marry a hurt like that and “Bloodied mouth”resemble the blood red poppies.
Poppies produce a certain drug that put the person into a calm and blissfulsleep “Where are your opiates, your nauseous capsules?”. Plath imaginesdrinking it in liquid form and telling it to seep through her senses and fill herwith an intense calmness “Dulling and stilling
Plath’s use of the word “Marry” brings to mind the she difficultiesthat she had when she was married. This is one of the main reasonshow she became depressed.
