I shouldn’t be thrifty: Vivek Paul Nasscom Product Conclave 2011 Sees Highest-Ever AttendanceBangalore: The adoption of enterprise social media has been much slower than what most hadanticipated, Vivek Paul, founder of KineticGlue, said.Paul, who as CEO of Wipro between 1999 and 2005 helped grow the company’s revenues from $150million to $1.4 billion, started KineticGlue as an enterprise social media platform in 2008 in Bangalore.“When we started out we felt that enterprise social media would be as big as ERP and we would like tobe the first Indian company that succeeds in the space. We launched before Yammer and Chatter. Sincethe adoption rate has been much weaker than anybody had anticipated, it has allowed these followersto catch up. But even they are struggling,” Paul said. He said because of all the rules and regulations that companies set out before they launch a socialmedia platform, very few people want to be the first to start posting. “You have to populate the bar tohave more patrons walk in. Facebook had big campaigns for people to join. So they populated fast. Theway to evangelize this in a corporate environment is very different,” Paul said. So the company is nowrolling out the product to small and medium enterprises in the hope that the pace of sales can beaccelerated. KineticGlue connects people to people, as Facebook does, connects people to information,and information to information in a social way. The underlying belief is that people want to look at areport and see what others have said about it. They also want to annotate reports and information thatothers can see. “In large companies, the platform allows reports that many people are looking at tobubble up. So you are able to prioritize a lot better,” Paul said. The idea is also that it would makecreation of social tasks easier, it would allow people with similar interests to get together and createmuch faster output.Paul said KineticGlue suffered in comparison to Yammer and Chatter also because it was underfunded.Yammer has had a cumulative total of $60 million in funding, and Salesforce.com’s Chatter too, Paulestimates, has had a similar level of funding. “The middle class Indian in me hates to spend money. It’s a tendency I have to fight. You could arguethat if there is one thing you could change, it is that we should have gone much earlier for a much biggerpot of money because it allows you to change the game altogether.” Paul is now looking for VC funds.Vivek Paul
