  • 1. AS Media Studies NARRATIVE ASSIGNMENT Analysing the Narratives in Media Texts: The Cat Came BackDue: Friday 25th November 4pm Length: 2 sides of A4Assignment: Analyse the narrative structure of ‘The Cat Came Back’ film.Apply each of the 4 main narrative theories – is it following the expected typicalnarrative patterns /structures that we see in the majority of narratives? The film can be found on the media blog – www.smcmedia.blogspot.com – Go to theright hand side at the bottom and look on ‘Miss McNultys: AS Media Blog.’Handy Hints! - Apply the narrative theories – Todorov, Propp, Levi-Strauss and Barthes. - Give detailed evidence from the media text to support your points. - When analysing the narrative with Todorov’s theory – comment on whether it is linear and chronological? - Is it (as we expect) a CLOSED Narrative (where we have resolution – all the enigmas and the disruption is resolved/closed.) OR is it an OPEN NARRATIVE – where the disruption is not resolved (or enigmas are left unanswered/unresolved?) - Do we have the use of narrative devices? (to give us lots of information and clues about the narrative quickly) Give some examples from the text. - This must be written as an essay – not bullet points!
