“You have to know one big thing and
stick with it. The leaders who had one
very big idea and one very big commit-
ment. This permitted them to create
something. Those are the ones who
leave a legacy.”
― Irving Kristol
There is really no better way to understand the Legacy of the National Guild of Hypnotists, than through
the words of Dr. Dwight F. Damon, President of the Guild, and the man who has been called, “The
Founding Father of Hypnotism as a Separate and Distinct Profession.”
Dr. Damon writes, “The definitive growth of our organization has been since 1986 when we made a
conscious decision that we were going to become the premier hypnotism member organization, and
that we were going to grow the “Big Idea” of being a “separate and distinct profession.”
During the past twenty-five years we have worked to achieve our goal, and we are considered a separate
and distinct profession. We need to build on that achievement to firmly establish our ability to ‘help ordinary
everyday people with ordinary everyday problems.’”
And as Dr. Damon adds, “It’s really up to you, too!”
The National Guild of Hypnotists, under the leadership of Dr. Damon truly has created legacy. In a
focused effort, since 1986, the Guild has advanced the “Big Idea,” constantly pushing the concept socially,
professionally, and legislatively that hypnotism is a separate and distinct profession. And what does this
mean to you? It means the opportunity to practice as a professional with the respect of your community,
your peers, and the public. The legacy of the National Guild of Hypnotists means you have the freedom to
conduct your practice, to help others in meaningful ways, and to earn your living as a consulting hypnotist
because legislative sanctions ensure your rights as a professional.
Our recent search yielded 162,000 distinctive search results for the exact phrase certified consulting hyp-
notist. That means that Google search can find the phrase in some 162,000 different instances on Google.
Just as importantly is this insight:
In the most recent 30-day interval tracked, 2,240,000 people searched Google for the phrase, “what is
hypnosis.” Additionally, another 1,220,000 people searched for the word, “hypnotist.” And although the
word “hypnotherapy” is a word we do not use as professionals, it is understandable that laypeople use
the word and is an insightful revelation that 1,000,000 million people searched for it on Google in the
past month. Remember too, Google search results represent only 60-70 percent of all internet search-
es, meaning these numbers reflect only a portion of the people who are actively looking for answers,
looking for information, and looking for you as a certified consulting hypnotist.

In his book, Legacy: The Power Within, Italian author and philosopher Tony DiLiso writes:
“‘Trust and be judicious.’ Remember, judgmental is labeling good or bad, able or not able. Judicious is making wise
and positively thoughtful decisions.”
Although you cannot, as DeLiso explains, “...motivate anyone anymore than you can give someone a headache …
(because) it is not yours to give,” you can influence others.
If you are not confident in the direction others take in regards to hypnotism, don’t abandon, judge, or condemn them.
Instead, use your example and your influence to bring them into a place of greater understanding and higher profes-
sionalism. Tony DiLiso writes, “We need each other. We need to know other people. Make friends, develop working
and lasting relationships.”
Everyone in our profession would benefit by attending the 2013 National Guild of Hypnotist Convention. Invite your
peers and others who have much to contribute. But don’t forget to encourage those who have much to learn to also
attend. Each of us is tasked in life to help others, not to judge whether they are worthy to receive our help… but
simply to give of ourselves, our time, and our wisdom and insights.
Challenge yourself to influence others to be part of the 2013 NGH Convention.
