The second element is named by dropping the ending and adding –ide.3. Prefixes are used to denote the number of atoms present.4. The prefix mono- is never used for naming the first element. For example, CO is called carbon monoxide, not monocarbon monoxide.5. If the element name begins with a vowel, the vowel is typically dropped from the prefix name. For example CO4 would be called carbon tetroxide, not carbon tetraoxide.
