Transcripts - Nation Report Pt2[1]

 • 1. Nation Report pt. 2 Cuba
By, Tyson Gannon
• 2. Music
The Caribbean island of Cuba has developed a wide range of creolized musical styles, based on its cultural origins in Europe and Africa.
Since the nineteenth century its music has been hugely popular and ifluential throughout the world.
• 3. Literature
Cuban literature began to find its voice in the early 19th century. The major works published in Cuba during that time were of an abolitionist character.
Dominant themes of independence and freedom were exemplified by Jose Marti, who led the modernista movement of Latin American literature.
Most recently, there has been a so-called Cuban “boom” among authors who were born during the 50s and 60s.
• 4. Musical Theatre
From the 18th century to modern times, popular theatrical formats used, and gave rise to, music and dance.
Theatrical music was hugely important in the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth; its significance only began to lessen with the change in political and social weather in the second part of the 20th century.
• 5. Art
Cuban art is a very diverse cultural blend of African, European and North American design reflecting the diverse demographic of the island.
Cuban artists embraced European modernism and the early part of the 20th century saw a growth in Cuban vanguardism movements, these movements were characterized by a mixture of modern artistic genres.
