  • 5. Example 1: Introduction I always think it is an amazing feat for anybody to be speaking confidently in front of an audience on any topic which is interesting to them. Not so long ago, the very idea of merely opening my mouth to speak was a genuinely tough challenge to me. I had this secret fear of speaking to people. I was afraid of expressing what I thought aloud. You could count on me to faint if the teacher were to ask me any question in class. I needed to shield myself from the teacher’s attention, which means, I would rather be the listener rather than the speaker. 01/21/16 Written by Motivated Minds/yeo yam hwee for Tampines North Primary School 5

  • 14. Example 2: Introduction When I came to the new school, I repeatedly told myself that nobody needed to know my secret. How hard I had really tried? Only God knew. Did I succeed? I shuddered with that thought. I stuttered so badly whenever the teacher called out to me to ask me a question while the others were watching. I was afraid I would get ticked off soon. I dreaded the arrival of the day when I had got to stand in front of the class to deliver a speech for my term assessment. 01/21/16 Written by Motivated Minds/yeo yam hwee for Tampines North Primary School 14
  • 15. Example 3: Introduction Some time ago, I was trying to hide my secret. I had had my fear of expressing myself in front of people. It was not the case that I needed to do that all the time but whenever I was in school, I greatly dreaded the moment I was asked to speak loudly in class. At such times, I would freeze with my tongue tied in knots; my eyes would gaze but see nothing in front of me and if I were to stand up any longer, I thought I might just faint and collapse and become the top story of the school on that day and the rest of the days that followed. 01/21/16 Written by Motivated Minds/yeo yam hwee for Tampines North Primary School 15
  • 16. Example 4: Introduction I could feel Mr. Goh tapping the table with his left hand fingers impatiently waiting for me to voice my first word. Some minutes had passed since I was asked to deliver my speech. The other pupils in class were getting rowdy. “Hello, can you please start talking?” Jeremy, the class clown, demanded mercilessly. He could have been ruder. Still I felt my strength draining away by the minute. I wished I had had the courage to wipe away the perspiration on my face. With my hands shaking badly, I could not say a word. Embarrassed and crimson faced, I was gazing down the script I had painstakingly prepared but I simply could not utter any words at all. It was as though the words were not English, but something else quite unknown to me. 01/21/16 Written by Motivated Minds/yeo yam hwee for Tampines North Primary School 16
  • 17. How did I overcome my fear of riding a bicycle? Composition by Yeo Yam Hwee 01/21/16 Written by Motivated Minds/yeo yam hwee for Tampines North Primary School 17
  • 18. Introduction Until very recently, I was always watching with admiration how others could easily pick up bicycle riding skills and how they rode happily, moving from one place to another. They should be feeling really proud of themselves by taking control of the wheels. I dreaded riding on the bicycle. I could never get my sense of balance right whenever I sat astride a bicycle. I absolutely dreaded the sense of imbalance, not forgetting the innumerable falling and tumbling, and the strong possibility of getting hurt. Riding the bicycle then, was like stepping on a balloon which could burst as and when I misapplied the pressure on either one of the paddles. The very idea of that sent shivers down my spine. 01/21/16 Written by Motivated Minds/yeo yam hwee for Tampines North Primary School 18
  • 19. How did I overcome my fear of spiders? Composition by Yeo Yam Hwee 01/21/16 Written by Motivated Minds/yeo yam hwee for Tampines North Primary School 19
  • 20. Introduction Scientists say spiders are very interesting animals with eight limbs which immediately tell them apart from all the other six-limbed insects. I, however, did not quite understand why anybody should be paying attention to them at all. Spiders made me shudder. When I was much younger, I had had an extremely unpleasant encounter with spiders. One of my playmates placed a dead spider in my porridge one day and I accidentally ate up a hairy limb or two. It was too late when I discovered the prank. I lost control of myself totally; my stomach convulsed and churned instantly and right on the spot, I threw up uncontrollably till my whole body was wet with perspiration. My temperature shot up sharply and not only that, my legs turned wobbly and my eyes became crimson red. 01/21/16 Written by Motivated Minds/yeo yam hwee for Tampines North Primary School 20
