  • 2. The National SMS Home Page The Trading Rules link will display the Trading Rules used during the Simulation. Please review these rules with your students since we may make changes to them between semesters. This link will take you to the Registration page for the state that you choose. The registration page assigns team numbers and passwords. In certain states, this page also allows teachers to register for the workshop of their choice. This link leads to Teacher Resources; the National Council on Economic Education brings the resources listed on this page to you. The Lesson Plans link takes you a page with listings of lesson plans brought to you by the National Council on Economic Education. This box is a quick and easy way to get stock and mutual funds quotes. It is also a helpful tool in looking up ticker symbols for companies. This box is where your teams can log into their accounts.
  • 3. The Trade Stocks Screen Trading Stocks There are four basic ways to trade stocks: buy (BO), sell (SC), short sell (SS), and short cover (CO). When buying a stock, you are taking a “long position” with the hope that the price per share will increase. When you sell a stock, you close that long position. Selling short is selling a stock that you don’t own (you actually borrow the stock from the broker) with the hope that you can later buy the stock back at a lower price. When you buy the stock to pay back what you borrowed, it is called “covering” your short position. To buy or short sell a stock, specify how many shares you want, rather than how much money you have to spend. All trades from the Preview page will be cancelled if not submitted within 60 seconds. This information is the overview of the trade you are wishing to place. In order to place your trade, you must click this Place Order button. Buy clicking Place Order you will be taken to a Stock Trade Confirmation. If you would like to cancel the trade you must click on Cancel Order.
